Since there was another thread on here talking about the possibility of GSP's getting to run in retriever tests in AKC, here's a GSP running successfully in UKC Hunting Retriever Club, where all gun dog breeds can enter. Saw a standard poodle running as well. Ozzy passed both days and needs only one more pass for his SHR. While it was 90% labs running, Ozzy held his own and had better marks than most of the dogs on Sunday-I was pretty proud of him. His test was a little hinky on Saturday, he dropped his duck when he had to come back through a bunch of decoys on land, and he took the loooong way on water. Sunday he had perfect straight lines on all his retrieves and no hunting at all on his last land mark....the same mark that two labs failed the test on GSP's can totally play this game, and in fact I saw one run at the finished level that was VERY impressive. Very nice work and pictures. Are you shooting and loading the gun at the line? I noticed that the dog is cheating the bank - do the requirements get stricter with the higher titles?

You do not have to shoot and load the gun at the line at the Started level....in fact all the judges recommend taking the freebie and NOT shooting the gun. Dogs don't have to be steady at the line. If you DO shoot the gun, you cannot hold the dog and it must be steady. Ozzy is pretty steady at this point but I took the freebie and kept a hand on him. He did 'cheat' the bank on Saturday, but it IS Started and so long as they retrieve the duck and bring it back, it's allowed. I'm not sure if it was that particular pond he didn't like, it was downhill from a pig barn and was pretty nasty and mucky. Sunday he took direct lines out and back for both retrieves in the water, and it was a different pond. Yes it gets much stricter from here on up. Seasoned, the next level, dogs are required to be steady at the line and the handler has to shoot. HRC is one of the few retriever venues where real guns are used. For Finished Retrievers, they are allowed one 'handle' for the entire day. It may not seem like much or very difficult to you, but for a dog that has only been on birds for a little over a year and had more upland work, I'm pretty proud of him.

It is much to me. Any title is an accomplshment. Thought I had was that if a dog is allowed unwanted behaviors it will be difficult to break when moving up to the next level. My philosophy is - train for the desired end result and guage progress with testing. for a dog that has only been on birds for a little over a year and had more upland work It's good they use ducks instead of bumpers - I like that. Is the dog allowed to begin a search or must they maintain the line they were sent on? Are you using a training method of a particular retriever trainer?

He was swimming better when he was 1 yr old and would go into anything. Now he thinks about it. Like I said, it was very mucky and kind of that mud that sucks you in (I almost lost a shoe at the water line) and he started to swim out and jumped back and took the shoreline around. On the next test he showed no hesitation and took straight lines out. A judge advised me to do more water work with him and start with shorter marks to build his confidence more. I don't use any particular retriever trainer. I'm doing the HRC work to help prepare for UT in NAVHDA. We won't go beyond Started until he has completed his UT, as I don't want to teach handling until we have passed the duck search. I use positive training, and with that piecemeal other training methods with no force. I've recently gotten the book "Positive Gun Dogs" for more guidance as well.

As long as your exposure and training is balanced all the marking for HRC should not interfer with the field and water searches. Handling can be a plus in both field and water. Have you spoken with others who have used low force training and obtained titles in the testing formats you want to participate in? Something to consider- an issue with the water may be that he is deciding and not obeying. If your goal is UT then stay away from marks and give him some live ducks. This will also help with UT b/c if he finds the duck live in UT and it is not shot ( I have not had one duck shot for my dogs)he will be required to retrieve it live and bring it to hand. Holes in your training will definitely show up and present an opportunity to advance training.

Thanks guys! Hopefully we get our last pass in two weeks. Definitely try it! It's a lot of fun, and people are really friendly and social. I can't wait for my next one!
