Wish I had a handlers clinic near me!  I am going to Wi testing in my first UT Test and would feel better with one!

Yes, I guess it is a long way from anywhere, two hours from the airport!

Brenda, which test are you running in? I judge up there somewhere on labor day weekend, I will check which test. I always suggest them to anyone running, they really explain how the scoring works (and you would be amazed at how many have run multiple dogs in many tests and don't understand!). What chapter is closest to you?

Have fun driving on 76! :P

Hope your flight doesn't come in around rush hour... or on a day there's a Phillies game... you'll be hating life.

LOL, they are sending someone to get me.
And it is late, I didn't realize when I booked the ticket it was that far from airport, so don't get in till like 11 pm! So, no problems with rush hour, I hope.

My main issues are with what you can and cannot do or say...Like can you say anything on a STF?  Whoa or not..If the dog gets distracted on the heel, are you better off giving a lead pull or verbal sound.  I have heard on the resend on a duck better to do it without the Fetch.   Just stuff like that.

You are allowed to softly whoa a dog on each bird before you flush, some judges only want it on one bird - so ask what they will allow
If you are heeling thru the stakes each correction lowers the predicate
A resend at the water will be w/o a shot
I have not heard that a resend with a command makes a difference- after all - you are resending

Your best bet is to ask the judges what they want. If there is an apprentice that person will literally walk you thru the entire test - if not - a judge will

Versatile tests are are an 'open forum' - if there is ANYTHING you do not understand or want to know the expectation of it will be explained to you

Have fun and may the birds cooperate that day!

Brenda. what I tell handlers during instruction is do what you need to do to get through the test (as far as commands) a soft whoa as you walk past the dog to flush is not going to be a problem. Anything above that is going to be a command (wether it be a hand signal, whistle, hard gun snap) But, remember a three or two is better then a zero. If you have to use a command, make it count. Remember all parts of steadiness are judged separatley then put together for your overall steadiness score, so if on one bird he breaks with the flush and you stop him with a command and he then stays until sent you are picking up points for your steady to shot and fall scores, so never give up and allow flat out breaks thinking you are done after one less then perfect bird contact.
Lead pull or verbal command are going to count as the same thing, so use whichever one is more effective for your dog.
Do you mean resend if he retrieves a duck and has to be sent back out, or is he comes back and stops on his own?
Either way, a fetch or whatever command you use is fine, and expected.
Hope that helps a little!

On the resend, it occured to me that if the dog comes back to you and you ignore him and he goes back out on his own it is not considered a resend.
There are so many nuances to this test.
You are allowed to say 'heel' before you enter the stakes. If you have not practiced the heeling stakes at the water make sure you do.

Yes, if the dog is checking in and takes right off, no problem. If he comes back and is milling round on the shore, eating grass, drinking water (usual avoidence, or displacement tactics) resend him. Usually after about a minute of this I will suggest the owner resend, your '4' is gone, dont let the dog develop bad 'test habits'.
I am pretty sure there are some handlers that are of the belief that if they stand there long enought the dog will go out on his own, and they have a four unless they say something, not true. A hint, dogs that come out and shake off, almost never resend themselves, that is the big clue they have quit the job. A dog that is truely checking in and loves the job, often doesn't even stop just does a fly by.

You would need to give a command if this happened.
