Francine - The top of the dog when gaiting should be nice and smooth. The picture is one of smoothly flowing and not bouncing up and down. The distance of the reach will depend on the size of the dog, but should be proportional. Now I can get what I call a prance (especially in my puppy) where she gets a bounce in the front, and it is cute, but not correct and is often caused because the leash is too tight and I am moving too slow for her. Each of my dogs has a different pace for me to get to that trot, but when you get it it should be smooth and not bouncy. If you move faster then you get closer to the gallop and as I posted in the quote earlier that can be pretty, but is too fast for a judge to really see the dog which does sometimes cover up flaws. I have seen judges quite often ask someone to go around again and slow down and sometimes the judges will tell the exhibitors to take it slow to begin with. They are looking for the trot where they can really judge the dog. Go to some conformation shows and just watch. When you see the correct gait, you will know it.

As to pictures and videos of dogs that are shown, you would be amazed at the number of pictures/videos put out to the public that do not show a dog well. There are allot of people that do not really know what they are looking for in the dog, but there are also allot of good folks out there and people that breed some beautiful pups. It is also very hard to capture that perfect shot that represents a dog in the best light, the right angle, etc. A good dog photographer can get it, but it is hard. At allot of the shows the photographers are not always the best. The one we had last week was a horse photographer, but didn't have a clue what to look for in shooting a dog. He also wasn't very fast with the camera either. The judges were trying to educate him on the spot and he was trying really hard, but he probably was not the best photographer for the job, but he was available and willing. Remains to be seen what my pictures will be like. I hope they are good. ; )
