Welcome to
shorthairs.net
I've got a few really simple questions, as I'm filling out my first entry.
Variety--this would be non applicable right?
Dog Show Class--is this "Puppy Bitch"?
Class Division--and then this "9-12 months"...or does this go with Dog Show Class too...and Class Division is non applicable?
Exhibitor's Code _ _ _ _ _ --what's this?
As a side note, do you always show your puppies in the Puppy class or go for Open? I read in Lynn Hall's book, that if a pup is ready physically, it is advantageous to enter Open. I think my girl, at 11 months is still a little gangly and probably going to misbehave a little, so I figure Puppy is my best bet for forgiveness.
Here are the answers:
>>Doesn't apply to shorthairs. The variety is like the ASCOB, Parti and Black varieties with the Am Cocker Spaniels. We don't have that with shorthairs.
>> Puppy Bitch is the class and the division within that class would be 9 - 12 months. For the males you would see a Puppy Dog Class and a 9 - 12 month division there as well.
>> This only applies if you have an agent. You don't need an Exhibitor's code. I have never used this as I always enter my own dogs and handle my own dogs. If I understand this correctly it would be for a handler or agent who is entering the dog on the owner's behalf.
As for the class, I have always entered my dogs that are puppies and new to the ring in the puppy classes. The judges are usual a little more tolerant of puppy antics from the puppy classes and they also are a little more patient and gentle with the puppies. Once inthe Open class the expectation is these are more mature and trained show dogs. I also find that a puppy for the most part can't show to their best ability when compared to the older class dogs. This isn't 100% true, and there are exceptions, but I still prefer the puppy classes for puppies. Some folks will tell you a pup can't win from the puppy classes, but I have seen judges put puppies up as Winners over Open dogs.
I assume this is AKC and you are entering online? Exhibitors code is a code made up by you that allows you to ask questions down the road about your entry. (looked that up online)
If filling out a standard written form--- Yes, nothing for variety Class: 9-12 (they know it is bitch from the "Sex" section Nothing for division (for weight and color) I would most definitely show in puppy. You want her to be very mature looking and well behaved before going into Open. Hope this helps!! Jen
Thanks so much for the info. Didn't seem like too hard of a form to fill out , but I wanted to make sure I was getting it right the first go round. I don't need any surprises.
It is a printed form for a Jack Onofrio AKC show. I didn't see online entry available.
Here is a link to the Onofrio website. All their shows are listed here and can be entered online. That have service charge of I think $2 per entry, but it is convenient.

Phyllis - The agent code was the code I was referring too, not the one you give to identify your entry. On the paper form it is next to the agent and is listed as Code #. I guess I wasn't thinking, but she did say Exhibitor code, and I read it as code. My bad.
