Ok so I have a question I have seen some pictures and videos that look like GSP's are hand stacked and then the collar slipped off and on to the handlers hand and then the handler holds on to the head of the dog is this how they are shown or is the leash left on them during the hand stack and examination? I know some sporting breeds are shown this way and from a couple of pictures and a video I saw thats what it looked like the handlers where doing for the GSP's but I couldnt tell for sure. I know its a stupid question but want to do it right when I get my girl in the ring.

Thank you in advance,
Jana

So in the TX area we leave the leash on. I have not been to a show where they slip the collar and leash off. I know that some sporting breeds used to be shown that way and some may still, but have not encountered that anywhere I show. Of course, I usually stay in the TX, LA, NM, OK, and CO area.

The only breeds I've seen have the collar removed and placed on the wrist are setters and cocker spaniels. I don't know if all the spaniels are shown this way or not. I've helped a friend show her welshies, and she too, leaves the collar on. If you watch someone show a setter or a cocker, you will also see that they pull the ears up over the eyes when the collar is off to help show off the neck. Don't know if that is something that is stressed in their breed standard or not.

When the judge goes over my shorthairs I hold the nose after they finish examining the head. I do it as it keeps the dog from turning their head, and I think the judges like it too. I have had a couple say thank you to me. It was something an instructor who was also an AKC judge taught me when I first started working in the conformation ring.

Ok thanks yeah I have seen cockers and springers shown that way but wasnt sure I am used to showing goldens so wasnt sure if it was differant or not. What kind of collars and leashes do you use mainly I have both silver and gold show chains and nylon and kangaroo leather leashes and have a kangaroo leather collar in dark brown both the lead and collar match and I think would fit my pup well should I use those or chains?

I started out with chains (silver) and a kangaroo lead, but switch to a kangaroo slip collar too as the chains tended to pull and made my dogs want to scratch. I use only kangaroo slip collars and leashes now in dark brown. I just got my boy his very own collar as my girls looked too narrow on him. So I got his a little thicker.
