I have two 6 months old gsps one male one female and the plan was to show them in their first show early January. It was a small show really close by however the male at this moment is very awkward and not put together well at all right now. While the female is coming along slowly with her showing skills. The female is very soft and I don't want to be fighting with her at her first show to get her to cooperate and ruin her. Should I go ahead and put them in and pull them if I feel like after this month they are still not ready??

This is my first time showing and I was excited that our first show would be small and it would be less stressful and great practice but now I'm worried we are going to have to miss it. If y'all could maybe give me an idea of what would be best I'd appreciate it. I'm definately sure I won't enter the female but I really want the male to go in he is coming along so well with his training and he does look really good at points its just not right now...will he possibly be more put together in a month?

Thanks!

He may look good by the show, but he is just as likely to be all over the place.  Personally, I would wait if you are the least bit unsure.  I showed Halo between 6 and 12 mos, but then pulled her out to let her mature ( didn't put her back in the ring until she was 2 and I am very happy now that I did that).  In hind sight I if I could do it over with Halo I would wait..  Instead see if they are having a match at the show.  If so, enter the match.  You can wait until the day of the show to enter the match.  You get the ring experience and everyone is really patient and helpful.  You do not get points for winning a match, but it is great training.

I see lots of puppies entered, but typically the 6 to 9 mos olds do not win either.

To find out if there is a match associated with the show check the premium it will have information on a match if they have one.

The show is in Clemson its the Clemson Kennel Club show. I think I'm going to go ahead and enter porter and run the risk that he might not be attractive and just bank on the fact that he is gaiting really well and he loves showing off. So that way if he is a little off stacking maybe the judge will be lenient since he'll only be 7 months old.
Tink however I'm pretty sure I'm not going to enter she just needs more work on being less of what we call a "flopalopagus" in other words you look at her and she flops over. You touch her she flops over while she is more put together right now she is just not ready to enter the ring.

It sounds like a plan. One thing about puppies is that they can look drop dead gorgeous when you go to bed and the next day, when you get up and look at them ya start wondering what on earth posessed you to think this dog should be a show dog. Do not worry. Its a home town show (or sounds like it anyway) and it is good experience for Porter. If you get a chance, or many chances, try practice stacking both in front of a mirror, so that you can set the front and then the rear in short order. Hopefully you have a judge who has a lot of patience with puppies and their antics, sometimes that can make your ring experience more profitable. One thing for sure, its an experience never to be forgotten.

I agree with your thoughts on waiting on Tink, but I would definitely take her to the show and have someone take her to ringside so she can get used to the sights and sounds of dog show 101. It will be good for her to have the exposure.

When is the show and who are the judges?

I think we are going to enter Tink in the match Friday night but definately have her there Saturday and Sunday ring side. It is a local show which is why we feel ok with entering Porter and also we have talked with the breeder and she feels that both look good enough at 6 months to do well at the show. But it was our call on whether or not to put in Tink. The judges for the show are William Cunningham and Dr. Richard H. Hilderman. Do you know anything about them?

So Tink is a flopper too? So is her sister. But Tessa's biggest drawback is she is super excitable around strangers...she'd be flopping all over the judge - and everyone else - there is just no way. I may stop by the show though...not too far from me.

Okay, here's what I've found out about Cunningham and Hilderman.

I've never shown to either, but everyone on many lists has given very, very positive thumbs up to Cunningham. He judges dogs, not the other end of the lead, and loves nice movement. Be sure and take him a clean dog with clean teeth :) He has a good hand with puppies and newbies, so you should have fun.

Hilderman also gets thumbs up, but with a caveat or two. He is very businesslike and methodical and is a no-nonsense kind of person. He's a Vizsla breeder. No comments were received on how he was with puppies. He judged at the GSPCA Nationals in Oregon (I think that was in 98) and many dogs shyed away and did not want him to examine them. I've had that happen with one of my old girls and an elderly judge who absolutely reeked of tobacco smoke, so that could be the cause or maybe something else (chemo, illness, etc).

Anyway, have a fantastic time, practice and go get 'em, girl. :) Remember, we ARE having fun! :)

Awww I can't believe Tess is too! Denise offered me a choice between Tink and Emma but said Tink would show better because she isn't as soft however if Tink is this soft I can't imagine how soft Emma is! I mean its cute and love how cuddly and lovey she is however it is frustrating during training. Well let us know if you are going to be there bring Tess so her and Tink can hangout and catch up while Porter shows

Thanks so much Phyllis for your help! We'll definately have fun I've shown cows and horses and while I love winning never get too wrapped up in it...ok maybe in the horses but not the cows. Super excited though I'll let you know how we do! When you said that Cunningham doesn't judge the other end of the lead is it common for judges to overlook dogs with poor handlers? And if so what are the lists you are talking about for the judges so that way I can know in advance if judges will pay close attention to the handler because I will get one for Porter. I don't want to hold him back.

I don't think Phyllis meant dogs get overlooked for poor handlers, although they certainly could.  I think she was talking about dogs get overlooked because the handler isn't a pro.  I have seen some judges go right past a beautiful dog not because the handler wasn't doing a great job, but because the person handling was not a pro.If that happens, put a smile on your face, enjoy the time with your dog, and go home and write down the name of the judge in the "Do not show under this judge column."

I am sure you will do fine.  Have fun and let us know how it goes. Get someone to take a video and/or pictures if you can.  The video so you can watch and see how you did, pictures so you can share with us.

So they posted the breed breakdown and its going to be good practice. There is only 3 shorthairs entered including Porter. So it will be very relaxed and fun! Good time for Tessa to come and have a family reunion. Have fun hunting in WV! Thanks for all y'alls help.
