I am looking at possibly using a PHA to handle our little girl, as my work schedule is making things more difficult than I anticipated.  What can I reasonably expect to pay for a handler (AKC confirmation only).  I will only use an individual registered with PHA, is there anything to watch out for?

Ken

Hi Ken,

I'm not sure who all is in your neck of the woods, but there are many good handlers who don't belong to PHA. I will PM you with names of a couple folks I can think of, but many gsp folks are at the National Specialty this week so probably won't respond immediately. The best thing for you to do is to go to a nearby show and watch various handlers, see who you like, see who seems to care the most for their dogs, then pick out a couple and ask to visit their setups. (This is not a good idea if they have dogs getting ready to go in the ring, or are busy grooming, etc ). Talk to the handler, find out who is going to be actually handling the dog (is it the handler or is it an assistant) depending on priority. Most handlers have their long term clients and specials at the top of their priority lists and may not always get to you dog if there are ring conflicts. Find out if you will be charged if someone else shows your dog (other than your handler or their assistants). Ask for a rate card, a copy of a contract and ask, ask, ask...every thing you can think of. I have paid on average $75 per show, with additions for group placements, etc. Specialties cost more, usually double the cost. My handler (PHA) charges $85 per show, $150 for specialties and additional increments for groups/Best In Show.

You can google Professional Handlers Association for a list of members in your area for a start also.

Best wishes to you and your girl (cousin Rico starts his show career this weekend),

Thanx,
Tina
