The hunting part of this forum has been a little slow lately & I would imagine it is do in part to the big game season's across the nation. Has anyone been able to get their pup out ? If not how about deer hunting ( I know it is a birddog site but it is a slow time for some) I live in area with low deer numbers & have not been out but a couple times before work for an hour or two. But nothing yet . |

Hubbs hasn't gotten Bella out due to deer season. He probably won't get out much for the tail end of bird season because then starts ice fishing and he knows sparing a few weekends to stay at home = a happy wife (though, I do enjoy ice fishing so I don't mind as much since I tag along often. I did tag along bird hunting some this season just so see Bella's progress). Anyway.. he got an 8 point. Just in time too since our spare freezer was becoming barren. Lots of venison in our recipes as of lately lol. |

| Jyoung good stuff keep getting her out ! Bella's mom congrat's to your husband on the eight ! & remember it's a tuff life being a sportman/woman . To many seasons not enough time ! i wish they would have canceled deer season where we live as the weather has been exceptional for this time of year here . I would rather be out chasing grouse ..... but i do enjoy deer hunting also |

| Next time out for me is 12/16, followed by a 12/22. A little tough in Northern Illinois with lack of birds. I wish the state would do more to bring back the Pheasant Population, and encourage the outdoor sportsman. I have the perfect area to support game-birds, but no birds (so I would say I get Sadie out 3-4 times a week but really can't because where we go there are no birds, and I know it). With the combination of leash-laws for pets, and firearms laws (including FOID, in combination with automatic felony for firearms violations), along with lack of funding for conservation... just a dying sport in Illinois. Demonstrated by the declining numbers of licenses sold in Illinois. Sorry, I will get off my soapbox now. |

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd |

| Been getting out a couple times per week. Been doing well on the pheasants and huns but the sharptail numbers seem to be down. Went out yesterday and got a couple of sharpies but missed on a couple of covey of huns. Duck hunting has been almost non-existent since it hasn't been cold enough to drive the ducks down from Alberta. The geese are starting to flood in so hopefully the ducks aren't far behind. Had a good deer season. I got a large 3 point muley. The biggest I've taken to date. My wife got a nice 4 point whitetail. Not very big but real symmetrical. Been popping a few coyotes. They seem to be everywhere the last few years. |

| Shot one greenhead today. Rowdy made a great 20 yard retrieve on it. I have been out a lot lately but with minimal success. Mostly duck hunting, but the ducks up here have started to move south with the freeze. I think it's the time of year where I start concentrating on chukar, huns and quail. |

Tgatto.... Preach on brother! If I may add 70 degrees in December makes for a warm day of walking birds. |

Yeah, sorry about that... Having lived in Michigan for a spell, I "appreciate" the differences in Illinois. If the state wanted, we are right in line geographically with some of the best Pheasant Hunting - South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa, but funny no-one is flocking to to Illinois for wild Pheasant... Not that you could get a gun (legally) in here anyways if you lived out of state...
Oh well. Woodcock sounds fun - I'll keep my eyes out in the woods .
Data on Quail and Pheasant, including bird counts and hunters (sorry to be depressing):

Bow season was good for us. Seen a lot of deer (no shooters, holding out for the Big Guy we kept seeing on the trail camera pics). Rifle season they seemed to all disappear. I know they are still around, just have turned nocturnal. Hoping things change around for muzzle-loading.
As for bird hunting. Nick and Maggie went out on opening day (before she got super sick) and brought home a pretty nice grouse. He said he would have kept hunting but he was too worried about the dog. It was more of a sentimental hunt for both of them.

Heading out for a chukar/hun hunt tomorrow, with the occasional rooster available. It will be Rowdy's first upland hunt in nearly 2 weeks. I know he's amped. |
