DH got a couple of sharptailed grouse!

I haven't seen this many wild birds in my life. We saw nearly a hundred birds. Someone must be keeping the coyotes down.

Unfortunately, Casey was not in the mood to hold point, and spent most of his time flushing and chasing birds.

But overall a fun day, lots of pheasant, grouse, and hungarian exposure. DH will be going again tomorrow, hopefully better luck this time.

We ended up canning the grouse, looking foward to seeing how they taste.

They did better yesterday, got three more. He used the check cord this time, it helped as it forced the Casey to stick around for the shooting part, instead of running off. Conditions were challenging, freezing rain.

Good job! We have to work with Bella on slowing down a little bit and staying on scent. Know a check cord will help with that significantly. Hubby seems more focused now on prepping for deer season in a couple of weeks so we really just wanted to expose her to the task at hand this season. we'll actively train prior to next season (which we really didn't do this year, just utilized her obedience and let her instincts put two and two together), and next season she would be a phenomenal hunting partner for him.

A check cord is essential to a dog like ours that likes to chase away and sometimes kill birds. We should have brought it the first time. These wild ones fly far, likely that's why he chases after them. Just frustrating when there are ones being shot at, and he's off in the distance. Try again.

Slow cooked the grouse this time with a can of mushroom soup. Very tasty!

I love sharpie hunting. I think it's my favorite bird to hunt. Sounds like he's doing very well. Hard to get sharpies to hold this time of year once they get into flocks. I've had them flush 3-4 hundred yards ahead just by poking my head over a hill. It's a rare person who say's sharpies are tasty! You would be very popular around here. People would be dropping off sharpies every weekend. Good luck with the rest of your season.

Congrats on a great hunt. I agree with using a check chord to reinforce staunchness. Congrats again.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.

In hindsight, our success rate with birds has increased at least two or three times(or more) with the check cord on the dog.

Sure it gets tangled and caught, but it extends the control I have over the dog to thirty feet. I consider it an essential tool, it's rushed to forget it. We want him to be around for the shot & retrieve, to bring things to full circle.

It's become a true art walking and maneuvering that cord!

Mushroom soup makes anything tasty. Mind you, the sharp tailed grouse here eat lots of sage brush, which can be tasted in the meat, a nice addition.
