Very slow day in terms of shooting.  Ended up with 4 dove, missed another one, but only had those 5 come within range.  Bird's weren't flying so I did a bit of hiking to find them.  Despite the slow shooting the day was highly successful and very fun in terms of getting Rowdy exposure to hunting/birds, and that's what it's all about.  He didn't actually see any of the birds fall, or I'm confident he would have retrieved them, so I had to show him where they were.  Once he caught wind/saw them he was very excited.  First he kind of mouthed at the feathers gently, then picked it up.  I told him to drop, since I was right there and praised the heck out him.  Very fun day and I'll be introducing him to more dove, grouse and sage grouse in the next two weeks.

Sounds like you had a great day! Rowdy is a very fine looking dog. Four doves is a nice days work when they're not flying. We had a nice opening day. Between the two dogs we were able to knock down 3 huns and a sharpie. Missed several other huns. Our lab flushed most of the huns and I sure have a hard time shooting over a flusher. Much easier to shoot pointed birds. Woke up this morning to hunt our best sharptail spot and our shorthaired was lame so we ended up going there with just our lab. She's a heck of a bird finder but the area is just too big for her early in the season with this heat. She put up two and we scratched one. Didn't see many birds today but did see the biggest muley buck (antler wise) that I've ever seen. Can't wait for tomorrow! Can't wait to hear more of Rowdy's adventures. Good luck!

I've always wanted to get up to MT to hunt sharpies... that's one grouse I've never hunted.  Our hun/chukar season doesn't start until October 6th, so I have plenty of time to prep him for that.  I'll post pics when I take him sage grouse hunting on September 12 and then blue and ruffed grouse after he gets acquainted with SG.  How hot is it up there that your GSP can't hunt in the heat?

Thanks guys, we may go out again Wednesday to a different location for dove that a friend told me holds really good numbers if the weather doesn't get too cold. That's the problem with dove hunting in Oregon is that once we get that first frost, the dove head mourning dove head south. The Eurasian collard dove stick around but are by no means plentiful. It's awesome to have that bonding experience with a bird dog though. Very cool to see him loving being out in the field.

The temps have been in the mid 80's but the problem is our GSP is laid up with an injury so we're down to our lab. She's a great flusher but it needs to get down into the low 40's or lower for her to work these fields for more than 20-30 minutes. If your ever passing by this way I'd be more than happy to try and get you on some sharptails. After the first six weeks of the season they'll bunch up into huge coveys and are really hard to hunt. They post sentry's up high and will flush several hundreds of yards away. Good luck Wednesday if you head out.

I really appreciate the offer.  Guess I missed the part about your GSP being hurt.  I'll let you know if I go out Wednesday and the same goes for you, if you come out this way.  We've got prime chukar and hun hunting and decent pheasant and quail hunting.  Good luck with both your dogs.
