In an incredible act of kindness, my Uncle (God Bless him), gave me his equity membership in a local hunt club, McCullom Lake Hunt Club (www.mccullomlakehuntclub.com/).  At very reasonable rates for birds, and annual dues, Sadie will have a place to hunt for her entire life!  Was made official Friday.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

Can I be your bestest friend??

Pixie: HA! That's quite the commute from NY, isn't it? Besides, you guys probably have more places out there to hunt more species wild (I thought you were more a wild-bird person anyways...). Illinois isn't a very hunter-friendly state (my opinion). I would recommend being friends with someone in Iowa, or South Dakota, personally (if you were going to commute...). Any takers?

Wild birds are great but you really only have good harvest numbers the first two months or so.
Preserves are great fun, especially if the bird prices are 'right'.

Agreed. I started wild bird hunting at the end of the Illinois Hay-day (some might say past) in the late '70s. We would walk for hours on a farm out here to see maybe one bird. At the time we also shot Rabbit, but even those got a little sparse.

Both hunt clubs I have been at in the last 2 years actually stated that Coyotes are starting to affect our populations of Pheasant AND Turkey. Last year, we would find a puff of feathers (nothing else) on the ground where Coyotes would get a bird. Hawks also take their toll on the Club Pheasant populations. I imagine same would be true to wild birds around, although I would think if we could improve the habitat, Pheasant would have plenty of places to hide, and we would see the numbers improve again.

Reasonable prices on birds are definitely a challenge. That's the unique thing about McCullom Lake. It is pay-for-what-you-shoot. They release birds on the property (of which you are not allowed to shoot during the releases), and you hunt for what you want. Most places I have hunted are pay-in-advance. If you miss it, you still paid for it. It drives up the "Effective" cost of the birds.

I really like this hunt club up here in OR that uses a lighter, faster strain of pheasant. Much more "wild-like" although I agree that nothing can take the place of wild birds.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.
