Today I went out with the guys from the shift to hunt one of our favorite spots we leave for the end of the season. Started off well the dogs found a rooster within the first few moments, then 6 hens, then a deer. Then things got REAL thin.  This was strange for the spot we were hunting; normally a place that is LOADED with birds and rabbits. We were blaming the 50 degree weather.   After about an hour of walking the guy to my left says “Hey look at this” and holds up a nice shed.  I was making some crack about his rack when I heard “RABBIT!!” from the other side of me followed by two pops. One in the bag. We collected ourselves and trudged on. Looking ahead of us we could see that we had birds running WAY ahead of us so we sent one guy to the end of the field to cut them off. As he neared the end we found out why the birds were running…coyotes!! He took his position and motioned for us to advance then suddenly he fired, ducked down in the grass and began yelling to keep the dogs back. I put the dogs at sit and went to check out what the hell had just transpired. Well leave it to the Marine to shoot a Coyote on the run in the head with #6’s!!!!

The grand total for the day was two sheds, one rabbit, one pheasant, and one coyote. By far one of the craziest time I have had out….ever.

Excellent day out.

Did you notice anything "different" about the dogs when they were working the fields?
My dogs act real odd when there are coyotes around. Can't explain it - something I learned to identify thro experience.

They were a little off. I can'really explain it. Just acting different. They were tracking as if they were distracted. This area is a big bedding area for deer, the birds were running a lot, and they were tracking rabbits. LOTS of smells to sort out. It did seem that once the coyotes were gone the dogs became more focused.
As a personal note the dogs have been teaching me how to read their body language as they work to tell me what they are tracking. Super cool.

What a day! Sounds like you had a blast!

Those coyotes are everywhere here.

There was a female pheasant that lived in the greenspace that we would come across occasionally. It was so nice to see, and great practice for the dogs. It was so disappointing a couple of days ago - when I came across it's feathers. Ah nature.

Wow - what a day!!
FWIW Bugsy gets a bit twitchy when he's on coyote - very easy for me to tell that is what he's gotten wind of as it is THE ONLY thing that makes him like that. Anything else he is all go (including fox which we have a ton of) but with coyote its as if he's looking over his shoulder at the same time as tracking.
We've had two up close and personals with coyote and he wants a piece of them but when he's on their scent it is much more of a cautious track

It's Bugsy's world...
