 Hey guys,

I am new to the site and will be a new GSP owner shortly and was wondering what the best way was to get your dog started on birds, specifically related to duck hunting? I know a big part is the pedigree, but I was just looking for tips on how to start him down the right path and give him the best foundation as a pup that will help him in the future. maybe some training tips or tricks that I can start with would be awesome! Thanks

Build up the prey drive with pigeons or ducks, if you can find them. Get a pigeon and rubber band the wings so they can't flap and scare the pup. Let the pup play with the live bird, mouth it, chase it, but don't let them eat it. Let him have a bunch of fun with the bird. Then take the rubber band off and let the bird fly away from the pup, in a kennel or something. Once the bird flies, you will have yourself a bird-crazy little monster. You can clip a duck's wing and let it swim around in a pond, letting the pup chase the duck around. This will create the same effect. IMHO building prey drive is key to this.

Thanks, I am definitely going to look into doing that. Sounds like it could really drive a bird dog nuts which is just the way I want him. I saw some of your post (duckfever) looks like you have quite the dog on your hands, it was really impressive what you had him doing at 6 months old. I really hope to have my guy to that point by then. Did you have him formally trained at all?

Thanks and to be honest, I really just lucked out with an amazing dog. The only formal training he's received has been from me. I basically tried not to take anything away from his natural instincts and abilities and simply taught him the basic commands he needs to know.
