 Hi guys,

just wondering how many of you guys hunt deer with your gsp's. I have a 10 week old that I plan on hunting deer with (sambar and fallow mainly, in Australia). Just seeing if you had any stories you want to share or any tips and tricks? Thanks

Strictly prohibited here in Oregon (and much of the US).  In Oregon we're not even allowed to use dogs to track a wounded deer.  Dogs may be killed if uncollared and hunting deer and may be killed if caught running/hunting deer more than once, even if collared in Oregon.

Here in NY I believe you can use dogs for tracking wounded deer but have to be licensed & get written permission from land owners before entering private property. I do know in the south I have encountered deer dogs. South Carolina for one state & I beleive there are many more that allow the use of dogs to hunt deer. I think a GSP would make a great deer dog. Most deer dogs I have encountered were hounds though. Beagles mostly.

Not legal in Iowa.  A bill was introduced last year to allow the use of dogs to track deer but it stalled in the state senate last year...

There are also quite a few people that hound hunt deer (only sambar) with either beagles or bloodhounds, It's quite a team effort I've noticed. My pups parents both hunt sambar and have produce many animals I hear and they love it.

It's really too bad more places don't at least allow dogs to track wounded deer.  The Germans bred these dogs to run and track deer and boar.

It's Is too bad, especially if the dog doesn't put chase on the deer or if it is used to track a wounded animal there is a lot higher chance of recovering it or having a final shot.
