Got out on Sunday with my dad. We had a lot of fun chasing some birds. Cover has been knocked-down and covered-over in the snow (especially since yesterday, probably!). So we were chasing the birds on the edges of the club - which also tend to be the ones that have been out for a while, and wise to the ways of the club. Positive effect is that they are fattened due to the weather, and time they have been out! Here, the two Roosters being held are the ones we got on the edges.
The big ringneck was interesting - it did not want to fly, and Sadie spent the better part of 3 - 4 minutes trying to get it up, or get her mouth on it. She chased it around some trees, then up a tree, then she jumped at it IN the tree, then around the brush, and finally chased it out, and got it pinned-down. Frustrating thing about the edges though is that you typically see (especially on a sunny day like Sunday was) more birds than you can shoot. There were 4 - 6 birds on the neighbors property - even in a stubble field where we could clearly see them:
I also got some good shots driving around the club as we were leaving (for those that like good pictures of roosters):
OH. Almost forgot - where we got the hen, and the Black Mutant under Sadie was a pond, with a tree-break to the West side of it. We decided to hunt there at the end of the hunt, on our way back (walking was TOUGH!). Sadie put-up 4 birds in a VERY short period - all hunkered-down in these trees, where the snow was drifted too high for us to get in. Two hens she put up twice - once in the middle, and then again toward the end of the cover. Great thing was that she never got too zeroed-in on any one bird, but fully hunted the cover. What I mean is that I believe she knew there were a lot of birds in, and around the area, but would focus on one, and put it up, then loop back, and work another bird, then loop back again. I fully believe we got every bird out of that cover just due to the work of the dog. Now, if we could have only HIT what we were able to shoot at... but that is a different issue!
