Well, I got news yesterday. The broken bone, so far, had not healed. It looks like it’s starting to heal, but is not where the doctor was hoping it would be. He recommended that we take an additional 2 weeks to see if it heals, and to go back in for some more x-rays. The doc has been very nice about the whole ordeal and is going to give the next visit for free seeing as it is not where he was expecting that it would be. So I bought another round of ACE for him hoping that it might slow him down enough to allow some more time to heal.

I’ll be heading back in, in 2 weeks to see how its going. He said that if it’s not yet healed we will have to do another surgery to pull the broken piece and to remove the wires. If it does heal, we’ll still have to do another surgery to remove the wires as they are causing some inflammation in the tendons (which I already knew, so no biggie). I’m really hoping that everything turns out in Dexter’s favor, I love the little guy and he’s been a pretty good champ through this whole thing.

The Doc did give me a copy of the x-rays, so pictures may be soon to come.

Yeah, I was really hoping for better news… What sucks is, there’s really nothing more I can do. I’ve done everything right and it’s still not healed. It’s very frustrating and really hard to stay positive when there’s nothing else you can do. I was really hoping to be able to go on a walk tonight too… Poor Dexter, at least he’s still wagging his tale and still happy to see everyone.

Thanks for your support!

Okay… here we go again. Just got a call from the Vet. They are going to be removing the wires Thursday it hopes for a better chance to heal. He said that the wires may have shifted causing an adverse effect on the healing, and that a partial joining is better than nothing. But if that doesn’t work that means that there could be some ligament damage and they would have to look in to more surgery if that were the case… So looks like Dexter will be down for an additional 6 weeks for healing.

The Vet did remove the wires almost 2 weeks ago. Surgery went well. Dexter was placed on limited movement for 2 weeks, then I was going to be able to start giving him short walks to help with mobility.

So after all the bum issues everything was really starting to look good for him. He was putting pressure on his foot and no longer lifting it when he was standing still. Which was great, the most progress that I’ve seen with his knee yet. Then it happened. I went to take a shower this morning and left him in the room. I came back to Dexter lifting his leg with a sever limp. Crap… so I took him out to do his thing, yep limping around not wanting to put any weight on it. I’m assuming a complete loss of any gain that there may have been. Completely out of my control. There is absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent this from happening. We were told that we can’t kennel him because the kennel we have is not big enough for him to lie down and stretch out. So we’ve been doing our best to make the kitchen (and our bedroom at night) his roaming/kennel area. It’s just big enough where he can’t really get a run started, and the hardwood floors make it a little more difficult for him to do so. We’ve been doing our best to keep him from getting too excited and from jumping up on anything or running. It can be hard at times, but for the most part we’ve done a really good job keeping him at bay. He’s supposed to have a follow up this week which I was hoping to have a really good report card, but now… outlook isn’t so good.

I know! Thank you for your comments. I went to bed yesterday thinking that everything was going really really well, and that we were on our way to a full recovery with everything. Maybe he was just excited to have the cone of shame off… who knows.

I put a call in to the vet to see what they have to say. I’ll keep you all updated

Fingers crossed it is just temporary, with Bugsy's knee surgery he had some post-healed days that he clearly limped and then it would be ok. I am praying he doesnt have a setback

Oh poo! I should have read this one first. So sorry to hear the one step forward, two steps back. There's no way this pup doesn't know how much you love him. I am sure he knows he isn't feel well and knows you are doing all you can to help him. Thinking of you guys and Dexter and hoping for good news for you and a full recovery in time!

Me too! I’m really hoping that I he can catch a break (no pun intended) here soon. It seems like just few weeks ago we were having fun in the back yard have a good time with some fetch, and going on some good long walks.

Still no word from the Vet yet…

Talked to the Vet last night. He said that he might have just pulled/tore something from being stiff, but there is the chance that he may have reinjured his knee.

When I came home last night he was in obvious pain still with a server limp, but it seemed to be getting a little better towards the end of the night. This morning he was still sore, but I have a follow to for his surgery tomorrow, so I’ll find out more then I hope.

Thanks for your support

Dexter had his follow up appointment here the other day. Dexter got some good news. The Doc said that his inflammation is down from before he did surgery to remove the wires, and that I can start taking him on some short walks to keep anything from getting too stiff. He did say that Dexter still has a really good range of motion, but to try to keep him from running and jumping (absolutely the hardest part of the whole ordeal). The down side is the amount of time it’s going to take to heal. Can’t win them all, but it’s a start. Next surgery follow up is in about a month.

Thank you all!
