I had an ex-pen set up as the gate across the opening to that room. The room in the background is the porch so we could go out for 'business' without having to go across slippery floors. I imagine if she is used to sleeping with one of you it will be harder but he was fine staying in his room alone at night. Most nights he chose his crate and sometimes he slept on the bed next to it. He doesn't go on furniture (his decision) so i didn't have to worry he'd go up on the couch. We would sit in there with him as time allowed. It probably bothered me more than him to keep him contained. He wasn't thrilled about it but he just dealt with it. When he was in that room he really couldn't be too crazy. When he went outside he'd try to run zoomies (while I would nearly pass out!) and when I started to allow him into the living room he'd get crazy. I had to keep taking him outside but I did reduce living room time if he got wild. Her leg is going to be less stable than his was and I could see he was an accident waiting to happen as the muscles atrophied (yes even with the therapy it atrophied). That's why I would be strict about containment and rubber backed rugs - I really do wish you luck. I still get a pit in my gut thinking about those days (((hugs))) and a kiss for her |

Yes. I joined the group! I'm hopeful too. Yes, even Maybrie's good leg has lost muscle because she lays around most of the time. I hope her bad leg doesn't atrophy more because she has nothing left in that leg. I was even thinking myself that 2 days of swimming for 5 minutes, or even 30 minutes. I am praying for summer to come so we will have access to warmer swimming holes for much cheaper. It's going to be a long road.
She has been sleeping with us with slippers and a cone so we can here her get up. I think she would be fine in the back room but we will have to move the couch because that's her favorite location. |

Maybrie has had a rough 24 hours. Yesterday morning, Maybrie wouldn't eat breakfast. Her belly was really rumbling. I was able to get her to take her Rimadyl inside a piece of cheese. I took her outside and she pooped and peed, but she went and laid down again and didn't move until 2 in the afternoon. At around 2pm she ate a very small amount of food, but still seemed "Off." I tried to feed her a few morsels more, but she refused. At 3pm, I gave her the prescribed meds...Clavamox, and tramadol. At 4pm, she vomited and was shaking horribly just prior to vomiting. She had no fever, her abdomen was flat, and she had bowel sounds. I deducted that either she is just having one of those days like all dogs have....vomiting for no reason...or she was in pain, or she was sick because we had given her several meds on an empty stomach. It all started here: I called my daughter while I was working the other night to make sure she had given Maybrie her meds at 10pm. She had not....it was 2am. I told her to give Maybrie her Clavamox and tramadol at that time, and she did.....on an empty stomach. (she had last eaten at 4pm the previous day. Then, to top that off, I gave her Rimadyl on an empty stomach when I came home yesterday morning, and then MORE Clavamox and tramadol at 2pm, on an empty stomach. Last night, I called to check on her, and she was shivering, and wouldn't eat. I deducted she was probably in pain by that time, not being able to keep pain meds down. I did lots of homework in the wee hours at work after the ER quieted down. Turns out zofran can be used on dogs, and I had zofran. I also went to the store and purchased low sodium chicken stock, lean hamburger meat and white rice. She had stopped drinking plain water, and hadn't had any in 24 hours. So, this morning, she was quite sluggish, she didn't pee or poop this morning....not that surprising. I gave her the zofran, and then 20 minutes later, I gave her a cup of water with 1 tablespoon of chicken stock added. She drank the entire thing! I then browned the hamburger meat and cooked the rice. I gave 1 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of the lean ground beef. She loved it. I waited a an hour and then gave her tramadol, and meloxicam (easier on the stomach that Rimadyl), and just as effective. I just woke up to check on her. She is much happier, more alert, wanting to walk around a bit more, and I just fed her again. No vomiting, no shivering....still no poop, but my daughter said she had a normal stool late last night. I was SO SCARED. She tore up a fluffy bed in her kennel the other night (the first time back in the kennel when she couldn't be watched and we feared she would jump onto the couch, and then her throne. I was worried she might have eaten some of the stuffing, but no stuffing came out in her poop or vomit, and she has never "eaten" her bed or anything else that she shreds. I was then scared that she was septic with a bad infection! Thinking the worst! I now believe that she got sick because of the meds on an empty stomach, and then was more sluggish because of a combination of severe nausea and later on, pain, and no food or water for 24 hours. Please keep your fingers crossed. It is SO hard to go to work and leave her. I so wish they allowed puppies in hospital ER's. I THINK she is going to be okay. My vet said I could call him ANYTIME, but it's Christmas! I will see him on Friday, and will call him if she takes a turn again.....but for now, keep your fingers crossed that I found the culprit and have successfully treated it. I have no idea how much hamburger and rice I should feed her. I'm just feeding 1 - 1/2 cups of the rice/hamburger mixture...mixed 2 parts rice, 1 part hambuger, and she is drinking about a cup of water with each feeding. I'm afraid to feed her any more than that. I would just feel better if she pooped again! |

Poor thing. When we had Bo neutered we had to quit giving him pain meds since they were making him sick. However, I'm sure in Maybrie's case she needs the meds, so ya, rice and beef to get her going again. (I do 3:1 rice/beef, but the important thing is to get her eating.) Hope she has an uneventful couple days. Merry Christmas to all of you. |

Thanks guys. Maybrie is doing much better. She has eaten a total of about 3 1/2-4 cups of beef and rice since 7am, and has had about 3 or 4 cups of water with a small amount of low sodium chicken broth. She seems happier! I found a Maloxicam pill in her bed....must have fallen out of the small piece of food I mixed it with. She is totally pill wise now. She finds it in her food, and she finds it in the cheese... I dissolved the medicine in her chicken broth this evening, and she wouldn't drink the little bit at the bottom. I got some yummy bread though and sopped it up and fed her the bread! She's getting too smart! Still no poo, but more importantly, she is more active, she is peeing, and she is not vomiting, and not shaking....and her tail is wagging more! She has left her slippers alone ALL day...over 24 hours now!! Miracles of all miracles! She has been cone free, and has stayed off the couch all day! Better yet, she is able to lie down immediately with NO PAIN!! She stands back up fairly easily, and occasionally gives an anticipatory whine...Still no weight bearing, and lots more atrophy, but that's okay. One day at a time.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! |

I agree probably the meds on an empty tummy- btw the rice will be 'binding' so you may want to transition her back to her food (for nutritional purposes too) - note transition not switch I used liverwurst for all B's pills post op - it is extremely attractive to them. I make a mini- meatball with the pill in it then toss it to him so he can't really chew it. Then I swiftly toss an empty meatball to wash it down lol BTW sorry that Brenda was a jerk on the yahoo group - she is such a know-it-all. Not a face of mine Merry Christmas to all of you |

Thanks Kpwlee. What do you mean by binding? Will it cause an obstruction? Will she be okay for one more day? I'm going to go back to the smaller morsels of the pro plan performance. I bought the chicken and rice this time and she is used to the small morsels of lamb and rice.
Yes, thanks for the sympathy with that Brenda lady! I could not believe the audacity she had in speculating what should have been done! I hope that I wasn't rude, and that I was justified in my reply to her. But the last thing I need to hear is what "should" have been done! I made a last reply to her around 2 or 3pm or so. |

Binding just means its great to help firm runny stools so it may be slowing things down, that's all. No health risk |

Whew! Thanks Kpwlee! I feel much better! Ahaaa! That explains why she's had fewer stools in 24 hours! She finally went last night btw! My husband forgot to tell me. I came home this morning, and she was good as new! I opened my daughter's door, and she was standing there wagging her tail! (much better than the previous apathetic greeting, just lying on her little bed looking pitifull.)
I gave her a couple of tablespoons of rice and beef to stimulate her appetite, and then I took her regular dog food, put 2 teaspoons of chicken broth, 1/2 cup of her dog food, and 1/4 cup of hamburger meat. She LOVED it! I should have her weaned back to regular food by tomrrow morning.
I quartered off a section of our large back yard and took her leash off this morning. She had so much fun having the freedom to hobble around on her own and sniff. Our yard is very large, but I quartered off a small section of about 10x15. She loved it, and I felt safe because she is nowhere near putting weight on that back leg....so for now, we are safe to roam in a small grassy section.
Until later!

Glad to hear she's feeling better. So hard to deal with the sick and older ones...believe me, I know. We'd love to have you join gsp-l either on FB or on the web. You'll get lots of information and knowledgeable folks too...Here is the link for the Facebook group-- http://www.facebook.com/groups/358271767519916/ and if you will send me a message with your email addy I will add you to the web group also.... Watch out for weather today too! I am concerned about friends in the Houston area with tornado forecasts out all over...the barometric changes may not make Maybrie a very happy camper! |

Thanks Singltrak! I will do that! We are okay in Houston, just lots of heavy wind. There were 2 tornados, and 2 lost their lives today. Very sad.
Thanks again for the information! |

Maybrie cried for 20 minutes to get a good cuddle with daddy....she LOVES to cuddle with him, but has not been allowed to get in the chair with him for the last 2 weeks! Daddy finally gave in and carefully helped her up! She laid there for 45 minutes!

One last picture! This is Maybrie's Christmas picture. I have been having to keep her covered with blankets because she shivers because she is lying still for so long, I guess. Our house stays about 68 with all this cold weather. Comfortable for us (with a sweater!).....but Maybrie and Kaido get cold so we have to cover them up! Kaido's not near as bad, but I guess since the surgery, her body likes to be warm.

Poor baby! Our girl MUST always be beneath blankets, our boy hates to be buried. Looks like she is doing pretty good ... those stitches look pretty scary! I love that you can see her tail in the x-ray ... it made me smile |
