As they heal the stitches start pulling more which can cause the redness and they will also get itchy. Sometimes a little vitamin E oil will help or a good herbal ointment/lotion (Halo makes a good one). That will help the itchiness and the dryness and should not be harmful to the stitches.

Thanks guys. I had figured now would be around when they would be getting dry and itchy as well...I just didn't know that would add the redness too. The vet actually advised us against any ointments or anything greasy that would linger and not dissolve away and had me use a cream instead. Luckily we had a Cortizone cream in the house that he said would be fine and that did seem to take out some of the redness pretty quickly. My husband is the one that kept wanting to ice it...Hockey boy that has had absurd amount of stitches in his life lol. But, the vet said that wouldn't really do anything. We did put a bandage with a sani pad around it somewhat loosely just to prevent her from wanting to lick the cream off or the wound in general until the cream could take affect. It is looking much better now. I just so want it to heal nicely so there are no issues on the 28th for stitch removal. We are both missing our hikes greatly.
