Pixie I know the golden retriever in the video had many diagnosis before they realized what it was. No doubt you can do alot of what Robbie did yourself. It is pretty similar to what they do with stroke victims to get their balance back. You can buy an exercise ball anywhere and you can work them putting their front legs on it for balance and it strengthens the rear as well.
Having him swim with a vest will keep the muscle tone up, but I would invest in a ball and work on the balance thing too. No doubt he still has some hunting in his future.

| We had a mini-Longhaired Dachshund go through this. He had his first episode at about 10 years of age, and worked through it over about a 6 week process. Occassionally he'd have a set back where he would have more severe symptoms (walking in a circle for example), but for the most part just had a slight head tilt to his left hand side - he lived to be 17 1/2 years old and was really OK -- and I'd dump any vet that isn't familiar with this syndrome -- it is fairly common in all canines. |

Roz, yes, I have the ball. We are a pretty fit family and do lots of core strengthening exercises. Walking up steps seems to be OK but walking down his hindquarters seem weak. He is able to turn his head to the left if he wants to look/smell something and he is walking in a more straight line. He is turned off to dog food tho, he'll eat it but he'd rather eat softer people food. Since Saturday he is able to roam free, but when on a pitch will wobble and sometimes fall over. He loves to roll on his back, and I had thought maybe he got a seed in his ear, but the vet says he sees nothing - not that I have confidence in him tho, anyway Haiko was rolling on his back on Monday. He can't shake, stretch or sneeze. The vet gave us an ear wash and it drives Haiko nuts that he can't shake, so I stopped using it. He does kick out after he does his business. Which is good for his rear strength. The biggest relief is that this won't kill him. and I'd dump any vet that isn't familiar with this syndrome I agree, but in the end I don't need him for much except for meds. As long as he prescribes those I'll stick with him. He's been a vet for 30 years - I'm a vet for 5 minutes and I know what's wrong. Years ago he misdiagnosed another GSP I had. All I really needed him to do was look in Haiko's ear and tell me what he saw and to prescribe the meds. He drew blood, gave eye gel, ear wash - all a waste of time. The mark of a great doctor is one who can properly diagnose. (which, thankfully, is something I can do quite well, if I could only stand the sight of blood.....) |

| Agreed about the easy hunting. Maybe dove or pen-raised birds? |

Update: it's been a week and I am amazed at the marked improvement. Haiko can sneeze, stretch, yawn, roll and shake. He is eating dry food. He is good going up stairs and mounds but down is a problem. When on unlevel ground his balance is shaky. He runs, explores,is independant again in his searches. He is dreaming again and sleeping in Emily's room again. Bregon knows not to play with him. They spend time doing things together but not playing. Haiko looks at other dogs on our walks but does not show further interest. Unlike him. If this is the best he will be then he will have a good life. I do hope that he will improve further. thanks for your support Francine |

| Well good to hear his quality of life has returned to some degree. Too bad it happened but sounds like you all are making the best of it. Hugs to you and Haiko! |

Great News! I feel 99% sure he will continue to improve. You may see some changes that won't ever go back to how Bregon was, but overall I imagine things wiill just keep getting better. Lots of hugs for everyone! Phyllis and the Singltrak Furtribe |

| pixie bee, I'm coming in on this really late. I do apologize. I'm sorry to hear about the problems you're going through with Haiko. Knowing absolutely nothing about the problem, I can only echo what the others have said and send positive thoughts and prayers that this works itself out with time. Haiko is one lucky guy to have you caring for him. |

Thank you. Haiko has made a very good recovery. His head tilt is almost imperceptable, he does however have problems with his gait on his right side. He will fall down when playing with other dogs if they bump him,he is not so good at manuvering tricky landscapes anymore and can't not be allowed to be active on unlevel ground. Another vet we went to said this is due to the Lyme Disease he has. |
