MIsty Moon a regal sit with GSP no nonsense stare!!! Hunter in an awesome point. Love GSP's Locked on Point pics. Much easier to snap a picture when a GSP is locked on point than when in motion. Great pictures!!

That is a nice clear point picture of Hunter. I like how his ear flipped back. The fall one of Misty looks like a professional portrait with all the fall colors around her makes her stand out in the picture. That is a very good camera.

I took the one of Hunter. My sister in law owns Misty Moon she went to college for photography. Hers are ALOT better than mine. The ears do that when they are playing. Sure adds character to a good pic. Makes him look like a goof ball. Oh Yeah he is!!

Ha Ha, I love it when people see a nice photo and assume you must have a "great camera".

One of my photography magazines once had a little story about a photographer at a dinner party.  He received many compliments about his work, with many guests commenting about what a nice camera he must have.  When the meal was all over he thanked the hostess and raved about the meal, commenting that "You must have a very good set of pots and pans".

Misty Moon's photo looks like a professional shot for several reasons, not just because the person who took her photo went to school for photography.  Here are a few tips that can help everyone get better shots of our GSPs...

      1.  Overcast days make for great photos. You don't have the sun in anyone's eyes and it doesn't cast shadows.  You don't have such an extreme range of bright brights and dark shadows - the light is more even.

      2.  Use a fast shutter speed to help stop motion.  A flash used outdoors can also help stop motion.

      3.  With many of today's digital point and shoots it is helpful to "pre-focus" so you can catch the shot quicker.   Set up your shot and depress the shutter halfway and hold it until you are ready to actually take the photo.  The reaction time will be much quicker.  You can also pre-focus on an area you anticipate the action to happen and hit the shutter as the dog gets to that spot.

    4.   When setting up your photo, keep in mind that Less is More.  Fill the frame as much as you can with the details you are trying to show.  Zooming with your feet is one of the best ways to fill the frame--don't stand back 25 feet and try to use your zoom feature on the camera if you can walk closer.  Also, we talk about the "Rule of Thirds" in photography.  Try to put your focal point of the photo on one of the intersections that would be formed if you drew a Tic-Tac-Toe grid over your photo.  Avoid having your subject smack dab in the center for a more dynamic shot.

If you can't tell already, I really love photography and helping others get shots they can be proud to hang on their walls.  I hope maybe some of these tips may be helpful.  There have been a ton of beautiful GSP shots on this thread!!!  Let's see some more!!!

Great camera photo tips. I love the camera too, but I know nothing about how to snap a great picture of our dogs. I always thought the sun had to be in the sky for a good picture and of course I always tried to make my subjects smack dead in the center. So I need to take my camera out on cloudy days. Every snow storm, I head out and try to get snow falling GSP Pics. Needless to say, I get pics of wet snow flakes on my camera lens. I do concentrate on backgrounds in my pictures when taking them of my dogs. I will post some examples of my snow pics to get ready and in the mood for the next season. Always open for more much needed camera tips. Thank you sooo much for those tips.

Thanks for the tips on the camera. Would that bethe iso? I have a 6 mega pixel Sony Cyber Shot. I have read the book and all it says about shutter speed is in with the iso. I think mine goes up to 1,000 on that but it doesn't tell me if it makes it faster?

Love the snow pics too but not ready for that here yet!

I want to upgrade to a better camera. Wondering what was the name of the camera the Dock Dogs use?  I thnk it was a fugi something? Can anyone recommend a camera good for taking action dog pics?  Would be nice for pheasant hunting  as  tough to get good action shots as happend so quickly. I think that fugi camera ran between $200. - $300 dollars. Thank you.

Ranger,

I loved your photographers story!  Every time someone tells me my camera takes such nice pictures I bit my tongue.

Ace1, your shutter speed should show up somewhere in your shooting menu at the time you take the photo.  Generally, speeds of 1/125 of a second or faster (1/250, 1/500, 1/100 are even better) will stop action so you don't have a blurry look to your shot.  You may see such a reading in your viewrfinder as you shoot.  And yes, shooting at a higher ISO setting on your camera will allow you to shoot with faster shutter speeds.  Keep in mind that the higher you go (800, 1000, 1600, etc.) you may encounter an artifact called "noise" which is comparable to grain in higher speed films.

Marie, there are a ton of digital point and shoots out there.  All have one big limitation and that is SHUTTER LAG.  This is the delay you notice from the time you press the shutter and it actually fires.  Pressing half-way does help a little bit to speed up the process, but if you REALLY want to be able to stop the action, you may want to invest in a digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera.  These do not have a shutter lag so you can shoot action much easier.  In addition, you can use a variety of lenses from wide angle to super telephoto on these cameras.  A couple of entry level models are the Canon Rebel or the Nikon D40.  Expect to pay about $600 for one of these cameras and an entry level lens.  If you want to catch dock-jumpers, it may be a challenge with some point and shoots.  That said, I know there's someone on this forum who had a recommendation a while back for what he used and he has some awesome shots.

Mit,  I'm glad you enjoyed the story.  My mother still tells me I have such a nice camera although I've had prize-winning shots in a local calendar contest for quite a few years now.  No, Mom, I had nothing to do with scouting the location, getting there at just the right time of day in the right season, composing the shot nicely, lying on my belly while pregnant for the perfect angle, calculating the settings on my camera for best depth of field and lighting, etc. etc.  Yep, I sure do have a nice camera

After searching the board I found the post by Gunther 9-16-07 about the camera.  It is the Fuji Fine Pix S700, 7.1 megapixels and less than $250 so you don't have to mortgage the house for this camera. So that is the camera I am going to ask Santa to bring this Xmas .  My current camera is only 3.5 megapixels so will be an upgrade.

Love all the Fall pictures, and the snow shots.  Not many leaves down yet but they are changing and I do have tons of pine needles down and we are getting Fall temps now. So I got Cody his first Fall sweater today ( he really needs an x large ,but don't tell him) I was surprised he kept it on. We went out to play and enjoy the beautiful fall day. I hope to get some better pictures once we get some leaves down. Just wanted to show you how handsome Cody looks in his new sweater. Cody's Mom

What's over in the field?

I see you over there..

Thanks for the info. I tried iso at 1000 but it still seems to be not good enough. I found that the camera has a multiburst setting so I am going to try that out tomorrow.
