Hello All,
Maggie came home this week wednesday and the home coming has been awesome for this GSP and it's new Family.
Maggie started out with an hour of getting to know her outside bounders, she did her business and played and ran with her wide selection of new toys.
Maggie is so smart, she has had 2 mistakes in the house, in which my wife said she takes the blame. we take Maggie out 10-12 times aday. right after she eats, naps and risies in the morning. we are so pleased with our GSP Pup. she is so loving.
Maggie is nibbling, biting or chewing on us a little and we are working on that.... any Idea's to STOP that?
Maggie is being Create trained and that is also going awesome. she was whining some the first two nights, but she seemed to adjust and last night was an awesome night for us all. she advised us it was time to get up at 6:30 this morning so she could go out.
What's your thoughts?
Best wishes
John and Kim Oldham

First, a big "Welcome" to little Maggie. Bet she's adorable (pictures, pictures please) and she sounds like she is doing great. Will leave the training advice to others as I have never trained a GSP pup. My Lucy was 11mos when I adopted her. |

as for pictures you have to load them on a ost site like photobucket... then photobucket gives you and image link that you copy and paste into the message here..
nipping... don't use the word no with a dog cuz you use that word in every day life all the time use "ah-ah!"... with nipping we would just squeeze their nose tight enough so they don't like it but not to where you are hurting them and say "ah-ah!" it worked for us even my kids could do it... our dogs never got face shy from having their noses squeezed either... some people say you can then redirect them to something they can chew...if you have something around and you can do it quick enough you can add that step...
also wanted to add that sometimes we would yipe like a hurt puppy so they knew that it hurt... you can also grab their nose and puh some of their own lip onto one of those sharp puppy teeth so they feel the hurt of being bit... |

Can't wait to see pics of Maggie! She sounds like she is adjusting well in a short amount of time. I would think a bit of nibbling and chewing would be normal for a puppy. Try antlers - they aren't harmful and are indestructible and will keep her busy. Ours are grown, and we got them that way. Velvet doesn't chew on anything but Windsor will destroy shoes and dog beds. They will chew on antlers for a while which is nice. When I had my old lab and he was a puppy, I came home to two of the legs completely chewed off the dining room table and he pooped in the fireplace. |

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new puppy. Can't wait to see pictures. There is a sticky at the top of General Discussions that explains how to post pictures. Allot of folks use photobucket but you can use any of the websites like that. I personally use webshots. As for the nipping or biting, now is the time to stop it and it is really pretty easy when they are babies. When they go to nip you, just gently grab them under the chin with your hand and put your thumb on their tongue. Push down gently and hold until they pull away, then release. I usually substitute a good chew toy for them when they pull away and I release. Puppies learn really fast not to nip or chew people as they hate having they chin held and their tongue depressed. |

The couch picture cracks me up! GSP's and their sleep positions. When we picked our Bella up, her father jumped on the couch for a snooze while we were there and by the time we left he was fast asleep with all fours in the air. Low and Behold, Miss Bella often sleeps the exact same way When she isn't stealing my spot and my pillows that is Maggie is oodles of cute. Congrats again! Enjoy this stage. They grow so fast. |

Let me just say those are some cute photos of Maggie and welcome to the forum.
I agree with Bev on holding the lower jaw with your thumb on the tounge. It worked for me and my GSP is very "mouthy." She still loves to grab my hand when she is excited to see me but she never applies any pressure.
