Swollen Swollen Swollen. It's coming.
No bleeding yet, and since I have always spayed prior to heats I have some silly questions.
I'm assuming she's proestrus right now because there is not yet any bleeding. Can I sneak in a few more off lead trail runs (she needs them greatly since she is still getting used to my being back at work and having more laid back days)...or should I not even risk it.
If I understand correctly...she is fertile after the bleeding stops? Or is it now prior to the bleeding?
My friends just adopted a female dog that they are super excited to get together with Bella. I'm not sure how a heat scent would affect another female... if maybe negatively, so I cancelled today's doggy date just incase. Do you think they'd be OK to meet this early in the cycle?
I feel like a new mom with every question in the book |

| First I wouldn't risk an off leash run. Bitches get pregnant during the estrus part of the cycle. You cannot judge though when it begins or ends by visuals. The proestrus cycle can last from 4 to 9 days and estrus from 4 to 13 days. I would not take any risks with her around males during the entire cycle. As for other females I have not had any issues with my girls, but they live together. |

They would be fine, I would think. If you see no color, she's not yet in season. Off lead...well, around dogs you know maybe til about day 5 after seeing color, but this being her first season, it may also be a short one with early ovulation. Your friends with the girl that they just got....I would be sure that the two girls got along well together before one or the other being in season. There is nothing worse than a bitch disagreement, or a bitch fight....(that's why they call them that). Boys may rumble and go on about their business, but girls seldom forget. Ask away, that's what we're here for...LOL! BTW, without running progesterone, you really don't know where your girl is in her cycle and if she's receptive or not. The first five-six days I always figure I'm fine....because my boys have NO interest....once that even shows as a twinkle, its musical dog time. Phyllis and the Singltrak Furtribe |

Thanks you guys. I'm hoping it will be light and short so she isn't shut off from the last bit of summer for too long. I think we are at day two of swelling/licking...no color yet. I just wondered if another female may have the reverse reaction a male would. Say, maybe almost offended Bella would dare socialize during such a time LOL. Maybe I'm humanizing their thoughts too much, but I figured better safe than sorry...especially with the new female being adopted and them not having a great bond with her yet to control her behavior should something go wrong. One more question. How long should we wait to spay after her cycle is completed? |

I think most vets prefer to wait at least a month anestrus, as during heat all the blood vessels are engorged and extra bleeding can occur. But, how old is she again? I'd wait til she is a year at the least. Actually, I've seen bitches who were recently spayed go after girls in season, so I think you are wise to consider that.... | She was 11 months on the 15th this week. We had decided had she not gone into heat by 13 months we would go ahead and schedule a spay. So, I thought along those same lines maybe we'd wait about a month or two (13 months of age at the latest) after this cycle was complete. Just wanted to make sure that was plenty of time. |

So much hoping the first would be light. It's going OK despite the battle to keep her diapers on lol. At night we have had to tape them on her, bless her heart. But the darn tabs keep breaking off despite how loose I put them. We also had a slingshot type garment for her that worked better than the diapers, but she decided to chew it off her of her the other day while we were at work. She's doing well. She seems to still have a drive to get out and do things, but I try our normal outside yard routine and she grows tired very quickly. So we go back inside and then she seems restless to get outside again. Sunday will be day 7, so I anticipate at least another possible week. The weather is so great and it will only be this way so much longer up this way...I hope she comes out of season soon so we can enjoy free rein in the outdoors before the snow starts. |

I remember my boxer chewing off all her diapers so she ended up being locked in the kitchen with no diaper and a yucky blanket to lay on.... I kinda like having boy dogs now, LOL |

I'm amazed. once again.at our timing. I read your post and noticed Hanna was doing the same thing. The night of the 21 st I found myself making a quick garment. I used two light day pantie liners and a pair of bikini undies and saftey pined them around her. I use them at night only . shes outside all day with me other wise.
The lab she plays with once a week started on the 22nd. They played together on the 23 and they did fine no more play fighting than usual. The owners put up a five foot fence and Hanna managed to not jump it though she did put her paws in the holes and hoist her self to the top once while I was watching her. They are worried that the fence may not keep out other dogs while it will keep thier dog contained.
Hanna's birthday is also on the 15 of the month . Shes 9 months so she will be spayed around 11 months. I'm relieved shes made it so I don't have to worry any more. So for now shes under lock and leash .
That is except ....for friday I somehow unhooked her end of the lead and noticed her walking by as I was unhooking my end from the belt . I could not tackle her . I hopped into my truck and began backing down a drive while calling her which usually gets her running back to me . Instead I backed into a oak tree. After getting out of the falling acorns and doing a few blood curdling calls I found her frozen in the woodland. and was able to grab her. May thier heats be short ones

Funny thing is, the hubbs went out for more diapers because TSC only had size medium and they were a little too snug, but our feed store was closed on Sundays. SO, the next day when he went to the feed store I told him to try and find a cloth version that is washable or that you can use liners in as it will work better than the diapers. He said they didn't have any. Yesterday I went in for more diapers and behold exactly what I was talking about...so I bought it, and it works like a charm, but we probably won't need it many more days. She's lightening up. Yesterday it was 90 which is going to be one of the last days we have like this. Our Falls come early here, and snow comes just as early. She looked so sad knowing "dad" had gone out to camp without her. So I loaded her up and we went out to camp. I figured I could keep a close eye on her down by the water and we'd spend most of the day on the boat secluded from any looming interested males She had a BLAST. She was so happy it made me happy. Today is cloudy and we are both being lazy |

LOL @ Splat. Though, we'd have to change the words in her case (this was her first diaper) "I'm embarrassed and YOU know it!" SO, B seems to be through the worst of the bleeding. It seems to be more of just a discharge now. Swelling has gone down significantly, though still swollen. Tomorrow will be day 12 from day 1 of bleeding. Is she still enticing to males or can we remove house arrest? Maybe it's just me, but I feel like she has lost muscle these past two weeks (She only had SO much energy and interest in yard frisbee), and packed on a little bulk in the middle. We both need to get back to our exercise lol. She's my inspiration, I've slacked these past two weeks too. |

At least, Bev. Have a friend whose girl was bred on day 18 (had planned to breed her earlier but just could not make connections). She's due with 10-12 pups in a week or so. Nothing is predictable with these guys. Remember, don't fool with Mother Nature! hahahahaha!!!! I don't do diapers...period. Mine keep themselves clean and bedding gets washed often. *sigh* Yes, I'd much rather be safe than sorry. Though, I did make the call today to let her meet a new female. My friend went to see a Lab/pointer mix at our local Animal Welfare Society and asked me to bring Bella. I called ahead and made sure they didn't mind that she was toward the end of a heat cycle and the two were able to play in the doggy yard on their own. The pointer mix did initially seem very intrigued and unsure of Bella's smell, but ultimately decided she didn't care what that was about, and they played well together. So, I think I will arrange with my other friend with the female to let them get together in a fenced ball field. It's so ironic all my friends fell in love with Bella so much they have gotten female dogs and couldn't wait to introduce them, and here we were unable to do so. |

| When Velvet was going through her heat I first tried boy's underwear backwards - well that came off easy. Then I went to the pet store and got her a cloth doggy diaper - worked great - the tabs were very strong velcro and it never bothered her. I put women's maxi pads inside them - changed them 3 or 4x a day. When the bleeding slowed down she only need panty shields. The cloth diaper was around $30 but I figured it was worth it instead of going through disposable ones because she bled for a while and our male is not fixed so she had to have it on at all times so he wouldn't "get her". |

Yes, the cloth diaper has worked SO much better. I'm annoyed at myself for spending $7 on the box of "liners" when it didn't dawn on me to just go to the store and buy 99 cent panty liners lol. She did chew the tab off the first one, but I mistakenly left the liner out and thought it'd be thick and fine enough...but I think it soaked through a bit and she could really smell it and was even more anxious to be able to clean herself. SO, I bought another, but again, only about $5 more than the pack of disposables. Needless to say, I don't know how you breeders do it. I can't wait for this to be over and to never have to go through it again since we'll be spaying after. |

| Yeah, I couldn't stand it with my unfixed male and Velvet in the house! I had to let them outside separately and they love to be outside together. I had to crate her at night. At home when we were home I let the two of them loose cuz she had the diaper on but she'd rear right up to Windsor and drive him nuts. A couple mornings I would let her out to pee when she'd wake up so she didn't have her diaper on and Windsor would run so hard he'd get through the door. And then in my head I was thinking - YAY PUPPIES! But after hubby told me how expensive it is to have puppies. all the vet bills and trying to find owners and knowing me, I'd wanna keep them all, and we both work, that changed my mind LOL |
