As I get ready to take a young, rescue GSP on trial (my first-ever dog), can you recommend any good toys? I will probably get one of those interactive treat-filled toys, a plush one, a good flying disk, etc. I want to have some good toys in the house so I can redirect him if needed... and of course, for playtime! He should have some toys all his own!

My dog is a power chewer (but only of her toys) so her main toys are nylabones and antlers. I do get her a plush one on occassion knowing it will get desqueakered immdiately, defluffed to follow, and then ultimately ripped to shreds. There is a brand at Target that last her significantly longer (I can't remember exactly and none of them have any legible tag on them anymore lol), but the only fluff is in the head and the rest of the material is significantly stronger than others. There is a red moose, and a purple and blue buffalo looking creature.

Also, I just recently found another thing that worked to keep her busy. I bought a femur bone at petsmart with the marrow removed and a flavored paste in its place. I don't know how healthy the paste is, but since it's not something she'll have a ton of I wasn't too worried. Since most puzzle toys are easily destroyed and rendered useless by her within minutes, this has worked wonders.

Bella also really LOVES her rope toys. I have sworn to buy no more because I'm vacumming threads every other day. BUT, you may not have a power chewer. It's odd how some are and some aren't. He's a little older too so he may have grown out of it (I suspect she will with some years).

GOOD LUCK! Have fun!

Oh, Kong tennis balls are also pretty tough. She can destroy them when she is ready to (But usually likes to carry them around and have them thrown rather than useless so she doesn't destroy them as quickly). Regular tennis balls however last a matter of minutes. She likes the squeak in the kong balls. She also adores playing Frisbee. More so than fetching a ball because I think she loves the jumping up to catch the Frisbee. It's more athletic for her. She has even started getting all fancy with her catches lol. So a disc is a great idea. If you live near water and your weather permits, a floating buoy you can throw for him to retrieve might be nice.

smalulewicz - You can buy those femurs with nothing in them and fill them yourself with something like canned dog food, peanut butter, etc. Freezing them makes it harder for them to get the filling out. Just be sure you get femurs that have nice thick sides so the dogs are not able to crack the bones. Since them are boiled and bleached they are much easier to crack.

Other toys that last a good while at my house are the antlers. I get elk as they are softer. The good news is they are easier on the teeth, but they do not last quite as long as the deer antlers which are much harder. Only one of my dogs likes nylabones or kongs so I don't usually buy those. As for plush toys, the ones that last the longest are the ones that are not stuffed and the bigger they are the longer they last. I usually get mine online or at dog shows as they have the best plush toys for big dogs. For outside toys, the gigantic rope toys and the large toy tires last really well and hold up in the weather too. Also the extra large Jolly balls are a favorite. the handles on the Jolly balls go fast, but the ball itself is pretty indestructible and the dog can bat them around or squish them and pick them up. They are great balls. I also make denim toys for mine by cutting off old blue jean legs and tying a know in them. When they wear out I just throw them away. If they get dirty they are washable.

My dog's favorite toy is her blanket that we put in her bed. In spite of all the other chewables that she has, she goes into her (or, more often the boston's) kennel, and takes out the blanket, and proceeds to toss it around, roll in it, wrap it around herself, and tear it up. We buy the ones for 2.99, or so, on-sale at Menards.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

Antlers, everlasting fun ball, orbee ball, kongs, kong wubba, kibble nibble are favorites here. He loves soft toys but just to kill them.
Wubbas come in a variety of styles, he really lives the ones that are like a rabbit stuffie at the top :)

At this point Havoc only gets antlers, buffalo knuckles, femurs, and there is one Kong ball that he's had for about 5 months that's lasted; he destroys everything else in a matter of minutes.

So Blitz has a new fave toy... it is a tiny beaver with a squeaker in it (like the size of a real mouse) it was bought for Bolt (doxie puppy) but blitz loves to put it in his mouth and squeak it... if we buy bigger toys like that he rips them up...

My dog's favorite toy is the squirrel frisbee.  You cannot leave them unattended with it as they will chew the little sides off, but my gosh Java LOVES that thing.  I cannot keep any kind of antlers around, have one that is way to possessive of them.  But when crated I will leave them with a kong filled with yogurt which I have frozen.  They really love those.  Other toys I buy are the ones without stuffing.  They last longer.  We go to alot of agility trials so we always get a toy or two that are stuffed.  They never last too long, but they sure have alot of fun with them until all the squeakers are out and the stuffing is pulled out.

My boy, Gator is tennis ball incested. Loves tennis balls and racquet balls. He has one intact stuffed toy, which he plays with on rainy days (inside play) Otherwise, a stuffed toy will last about 1 hr, he pulls the stuffing out, and walks around with the squeaker in his mouth.

The only thing Gunner has been really keen on lately is Tennis Balls. He really never cared about them before, but now he is a retrieving machine! Fortunately for me, he only is allowed to play with them outside of the house and will drop them on the way in the door. Otherwise I'd be playing fetch ALL DAY LONG. LOL

Squeaky toys he does like, and if he really likes it he won't destroy it. They aren't his favorite anymore though.
