I remember it so well - I would hold it up to my face, look into his eyes and try to decide if he looked like "Herbie"
shrugs, Ok guess I was a bit odd :)

Usually I pick my name after I get the dog, but with Ringo I had the name picked out years before I got him. It was funny though because the name was right for him anyway. Then when the breeder told me her theme for the litter (the dogs name must have Ring or something to do with rings in it) I knew it was meant to be.

With Fauna she was out of my first breeding and being the sentimental fool I am I really wanted to use the name I had given to my first dog (was a stuffed dog that I got when I was like 2 or 3) which was Fauna (Sleeping Beauty was big when I was little). Fauna fit her, so it to worked. Her official name is Yellow Rose's Gift of Song. Fauna gave Aurora the gift of song, and Fauna's real life grandmothers call name was Song. So it fit perfectly.

I am really picky about my names.

@Kpwlee, not weird. when I was little I collected things like toads and garter snakes regularly. ALWAYS named them "Hermie". I suppose at that age I thought all reptile like things fit to bill of the name "Hermie". SO, I would take them to show and tell...probably once a week, and they were always named...Hermie LOL. My teacher must have gotten a real hoot out of me.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but time's a' passin and i'm panicking now cos the breeder will need the name for the transfer on the pick up day

New additions to the list are "Harris" (favourite beaches there) and Islay (beaches again - Kintra Bay is in Islay). Think i'm giving this too much thought now - some of the (unmentioned) suggestions are getting just silly  I kinda liked Tawny )as in the owl.

Miss you forever Kintra baby xxx

I like Islay. Say your favorites over and over again and make sure they come out easily lol. It's gonna be cute regardless!

For training purposes I always like no more than two syllables and something that ends in o or a. Names that follow these rules are easy to say. Also make sure the name is not close to any commands you use.

So for naming for transfer purposes you can give the dog a formal name for registration and still call your dog anything you want too, so quit worrying about it. Just pick a name for transfer purposes and give your dog it's call name when you get him.

When I went to meet Chelsea I was going to name her either Mocha or Java (as in coffee) until she turned out to be mostly white.    I'd be tempted by "Joe" for a boy, as in "Cuppa Joe?"     Or Brodie, which is very good for yelling  BRO-DEEEEEE!    Good luck with choosing!

I love Islay! Just saying. :) I had Nixie almost two full days before I decided on hers so I can't imagine trying to pick a name before picking the pup up!

Nixiesmark - i actually love the idea of almost getting to know her a little before naming her even if it was just for a few hours, but to be honest, OH and i and probably the world's worst when it comes to decision-making, the poor dog would probably go un-named for a few months

I have done it both ways where I have a name picked ahead and where I hadn't decided on the name until I got the puppy. In both instances I had the right name. Not sure how that happens, but my names were right both ways. Also remember dogs always live up to there names.

I had wanted a male shorthair a long time and was supposed to get a male from the litter I ended up getting Halo from and had the name all picked out. I so wanted to name a boy Johnny Ringo after the old west outlaw. Three years later I finally got my boy from the breeder and I couldn't have picked a better name for him. And yes, he is a thief. He steals food so slickly most don't even know until they reach for their plate and everything is gone. BTW someone was looking after me with the first litter, because Halo is my foundation dog and was the reason I got into breeding. She also gave me a beautiful little princess (Fauna).

Wow! Been a while since I have reviewed this thread! It has grown legs! Guess that's what happens when you bribe with a bottle...! LOL! To Texas Belle's point - Islay may be confused with a command, "Lay!". Admittedly, however, I have never thought of naming like that - good thought!

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

We use "down" for lie down so that solves that ;) it's beautiful and unique. My favorite I think ;)

Islay is starting to stick.  The only problem i can foresee is it causing arguments with/among people as there is always disagreement as to whether the island of Islay is pronounced Ie-lay or Ie-lah.  Think the locals say the latter, but many others the former, i prefer and use the former.  People have so far struggled to understand Kintra and Keely.  When introducing Kintra they would say "oh, Kendra, how very posh" , and with Keely "oh, Kayleigh, that's my daughter's name"  It's obviously my pronunciation, maybe we should stick to something simple like Bob  (for any Bobs reading this, i'm not trying to say YOU'RE simple)

I must not pronunciate well either cuz people always get my dogs and kids names wrong... what is hard about Blitz, Bolt, Quenten and Colten... when I tell people it is Quenten they always say why did you name him after President Clinton, I just shake my head and say nope named him after Quentin Tarantino! Which I didn't...
