My 2-year old was thin too. They are just so energetic they burn it off faster than they can put it on. I started putting a raw egg in her food. I heard here that putting the shell in is also good for joints, but Sadie just spits it out. Texas Belle (on the forum) has a good recipe for some treats that put weight on fast (if you show the dog), but usually just time, and healthy, high protein and calories gets the dog there. I would tell you I was nervous about Sadie's weight at a year and a half, but am comfortable now at 2 1/4 years.

How much does she weigh (and/or post a picture).

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

My 14 month female old is on the thin side too. Our breeder says she could stand to gain probably about 1/4 pound nut no more. In my mind, she could stand to gain about 5 or 6 pounds! I told my vet I was concerned about her weight the last time I saw him, and he said, "This isn't a Laborador!" Just goes to show, your 2 year old probably isn't as thin as you think. GSP's are thin lean breeds.

You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

yeah my 2 year old will go from one minute looking just perfect and then next thing I know he is thin... I just give some extras to plump him back up... it seems to depend on how much running around he does...

The youngsters are usually hard to keep weight on them because they are always on the go. I have that problem with my two year old. I feed a high fat and protein food that helps allot. Right now she weighs 50 lbs and is a tad thin. Her uncle weighs 65 lbs. Right now she eats double what I feed her uncle. Also with bitches just before they come in season they start putting on weight in preparation for potentially having puppies. So at that time I have to cut her food down. The easiet barometer of weight in a GSP is not the scales. If you can just see the last one or two ribs then they are just right. You should not be able to see the spin or hip points. You should also be able to feel all the ribs. My guess is she is not as skinny as you think.

Our Atlas just turned 2 in August and was also what I considered very thin. The vet always said he was okay, but I could SEE almost all his ribs, plus his spine, and his hip bones were very prominent. He eats 4 cups of Purina Pro Plan Performance a day, which I thought was a lot, but he still couldn't seem to put on any weight. With winter coming, I was hoping to beef him up just a little so he wouldn't shiver himself to sleep every night, lol. And then I rememberd someone mentioning Satin Balls (hilarious...I know). I googled the recipe and found one that only used 1lb of beef instead of the big-batch 10 lb recipe. I tried it out, and within about 2 weeks Atlas's ribs have disappeared, other than the last one which you can only see if he moves a certain way, and his spine and hip bones finally look like they're not trying to jump out of his skin! He now eats one ball a day (plus his regular kibble), about baseball sized, to maintain his current size. His coat has never been shinier, he no longer shivers at night, and he looks like an athlete. Plus he LOVES his "treats". I keep the balls in the freezer and just defrost in the microwave before giving to him. It may seem gross at first, but it really works!
