Ruger is almost 4 months old now, and has decided to start to chew his bedding in this crate. He has now chewed up 2 beds, and shows no sign of stopping. I did not know what everyone else used as bedding for their GSP while in the crate?

All of mine are different.  When going through the really bad chewing stage they had to earn their bedding (all of the crates have padding underneath).  Only one can be trusted with a bed or a comforter, which she will sleep on but then has a blanket that she will burrow under.  One has no blankets and really doesn't care.  One likes to make his bed so I give him smaller scrap pieces that he can move around, which is quite funny to watch.  Another has a large blanket he likes to push into a pile then make a nest in it.  The others have a couple of  "throw" size blankets and move them around how they like.  I pick up blankets from the local resale shop so they don't cost a lot if they do get destroyed.

Binni chewed and destroyed her way through seven beds during her fist year.  She only chewed when we left the house.  I don't think she wanted to be in that crate unless she decided to go in on her own.  She is 14 months now and we have taken the crate down.  She behaves much better without it.  I just close the doors to a few rooms when we leave.  So far, so good

After seven beds, I wrapped a sheet around an old mattress pad and that worked.  She didn't bother it at all.  I felt bad because there wasn't much padding for her, but I was always afraid that she would eat the stuffing from the beds that she was having so much fun tearing apart.

 gspnole.  Welcome to the GSP club of destroyers!  I believe I can be of some assistance because of the wonderful help I received over the SAME issue!   My GSP pups, 2 of them, are 14 months old now.  By the time they were 9 months old, they had torn up at least 3 or 4 beds.   The last one was quite expensive, so I turned to the forum for advice.  This is what truly worked for me:

Get an old, (or new) queen or full size comforter, along with a couple of other small blankets, throw them all in there and call it good!

I purchased 2 $20.00 queen size comforters off of amazon.com, and then discovered that walmart carries 20.00 comforters too!   Seriously, throw the pillow shams in there too, more than likely your GSP will tear up the sham, but that's okay!  That's what it's there for.  I would love to advance mine to a more comfortable bed, (or what I think would be more comfortable), but these two LOVE to move the blankets around and make their own little bed nest.   It's not pretty, but it's practical!   Honestly, neither has touched the comforter, they go after the smaller shams or smaller blankets that I throw in there.   I have had the bedding for at least 4-6 months, and have been quite pleased!! I am hoping to advance them to their forever beds by the time they are 3 or 4!
