I feel like the only times I'm posting on this is when Nixie is having stomach issues. :-/ I do plan on taking her to the vet but I wanted to see what you guys thought about taking her sooner to an emergency clinic. She's been having diarrhea on and off now for about a week. Two times when it was the runs diarrhea and we were up every hour last night. We tried rawhide again but it ate up her stomach (and I believe the reason for the first bout of diarrhea) so I won't be giving that to her anymore. That helped and she was normal for about two days then she had diarrhea again last night. I'm at a loss for this time though. She's still her energetic self and still has an appetite. She is eating grass though. Because of all this she's losing weight and she's already skinny for her height. I read that this breed has a sensitive stomach. Is that the case with your dogs? Thanks all.

If she's up every hour for more than a couple of days, it may not hurt to visit the vet. Even with Bella's worst bout of runs, she only woke up me twice in the night. I don't do rawhides...they are hard on Bella's stomach. Especially since she goes through things like that too fast. Is there anything else Nixie may be getting into around/outside the house? Any house plants she is maybe nawing on due to tummy issues...but may actually be worsening the issue? I had to get ride of things like my peace lily because I didn't want to chance Bella deciding to snack on them. Bless her heart... I recently looked up pumpkin as Bella got some when carving pumpkins to make sure it wouldn't hurt her. I read (and believe I have read it suggested on here too) where pumpkin can aid in tummy troubles. I'm not sure exactly how you would add it to the food...true pumpkin or canned pumpkin. Someone else probably knows. Hope she feels better soon!

Our Casey had repeated bouts of Giardia from drinking stale poopy slew water. A quick visit to the vet to get medication always cleared this up.

We avoid raw hides as they can cause runny poo.

I find it also helps to keep the water dish at home clean, by dumping old water, washing the dish, and replacing with new water.

Mine like to eat grass, regardless whether or not they are sick.

I suggest seeing the vet if she has ongoing diarrhea.

I would definitely get her to the vet's asap. That is too much diarrhea. Is she drinking water. You don't want her to get dehydrated.

As for the pumpkin, you just scoop a few spoonfuls on their food. Get canned pumpkin and be sure it's plain, not the kind you use to make pies.

Prayers she is feeling better soon. Will be waiting to hear what the vet has to say.

I would take her to the vet to be sure it isn't something like giardia. It may also be that her digestive track is really irritated and if it turns out that is the case you can put her on boiled chicken and rice and gradually move her back to her regular food. Pumpkin does help as was said a few scoops in the food.

I also have had problems with my dogs when hiking when they get into water that doesn't agree with them. Since I was not going to be around a vets or civilization I started taking Pepto and Immodium with me. When this happens I give Pepto based on weight and if that doesn't clear it up I then give Immodium again based on weight (I use liquid for both) It has always worked for me. Just so you know I had consulted with my vet and they had suggested the Pepto and Immodium.

Also another thing could be hook worm. When we got Velvet she had it and she kept losing weight and had very runny stools. She got on meds from the vet and we took her off grain food and she did just fine.

Thanks for the suggestions. She is thankfully drinking plenty of water still. I would've taken her the emergency clinic for sure if she wasn't. I fasted her yesterday and now weaning her slowly back on her food and so far so good. We'll see how it goes tonight. As for the yard..it's a big one and not all landscaped so weeds are in the back. I don't monitor her at all times back there but since she is a pup still I watch her out the window sometimes to make sure she's not getting into trouble. We have Crepe Myrtles that she's been digging into the roots.

Smylinacha, she did have hookworms in August but I give her Trifexis every month and it was fine the last two months.

I'll be calling the vet first thing in the morning.

Thanks again for helping!!

Just a quick question. Is it possible that her system would suddenly not accept the regular food I've been giving her? She hasn't had problems with it before..

Not likely. The exceptions would be if the formula was changed or the bag of food was spoiled. I have had both happen. Is this a new bag of food? Does it smell funny? Might not hurt to try a new bag, but buy a small bag just in case. The more likely scenario is she ate something you are not aware of.

Okay thanks Texas Belle. It's not old so it's not that.

I took her to the vet today and he gave me some medicine to ease the diarrhea. Nothing in the feces examination..so it's probably just something out back that she keeps snacking on that keeps upsetting her stomach. He said he thinks it might be her age and changing body too since I haven't spayed her yet? I thought that was interesting.

So hopefully I'll be able to figure out what she's getting into soon.

Thanks again!

That might have been a remark targeted at getting you to spay ;) One vet at our clinic ALWAYS passive aggressively made me second guess our decision to wait. Glad her test came back OK. Bella's worst bout of runs came after she injured her mouth playing with a stick. I thought it was a result of her being so young, and her body's shock over its first lingering injury. BUT, then I read that bark can cause diarrhea so I assumed she ingested some of the stick. Though, her favorite thing to do is strip sticks of their bark, but she spits most out and doesn't eat it. Do you have mushrooms in your yard? We had a few patches that always intrigued Bella, and I had to keep a close eye to make sure she didn't find any before me.

Drinking saltwater can also cause serious diarrhea.

I don't see how spaying and diarrhea could be related.

When Zoe was younger she started having issues with bouts of diarrhea and the culprit for her ending up being that she was allergic to chicken and the food I was feeding her was chicken based.  The folks at the pet store said that it is very common for a dog to be allergic to chicken.

Both Archer & Zoe have very sensitive stomachs and I can't do bully sticks, rawhides, etc.   Archer seems as though he is always starving so I feel bad and give him a little extra but if I overfeed them in the least bit they end up with diarrhea.
