What do you use for tick control for your dogs that hunt? My 6 month old GSP just started field training last month and has come home with 5 embedded ticks over the past few weeks. She's currently on Revolution for heartworm, fleas,and ticks but it's not cutting it. |

| God, I hate ticks! I pulled an engorged on off of Bo last week. Gave me the willies. No signs of any ill effects thank goodness. It reminded me that I had a batch of natural tick repellent that unowhoandwhy posted on here a few years ago. If I can find the thread, I will post a link, |

I have read that advantix or the preventix collar works. Have heard good things about the Adams spray too. We choose neither and do a thorough combing with a lice comb after each outing during tick season, mind you ticks are not as common where we are. |

We used Frontline the beginning of this past Summer, but for some reason ticks were just absurd here this year. At first, we found more on us than her (my assumption was they were riding in on her and jumping onto us since we were usually unprotected. But then, we started finding more on her. We'd average removing about 4 after a weekend at camp (I also credit her swimming constantly to possibly removing many on her own). I heard stories of others on Frontline and any other types that were still removing a ton of ticks. Her sister about two hours away had 14 removed from her one day. Luckily, we don't live in a high risk Lime's disease area...but still...who wants to deal with ticks. Just the thought of them...ICK.
So anyway, I discontinued her frontline, and we started just spritzing her with no deet bug spray (anything safe for children) and this seem to work just as well as the Frontline was, without any of the possibilities of side effects that you hear these types of things sometimes cause. |

| Trying to stay away from all kinds of chemicals with max so I have found by careful observation you can clear them of this type bug. Last week we went hunting one day & between us was able to remaove a dozen or so ticks crawling .Maybe four on me & 8 on max. Did have one hooked on max . Probably one from another outing. I am posting this to show it is possible to clear them without chemicals. Skeeeevy as they are when they are not hooked they are just crawling critters ! |

I use for Rocky, K9 advantix two. I order it from Drs Foster and Smith on line. Normally can get free shipping and handling. We have had no ticks on Rocky for years and have him in the fields and woods every day. Good luck. Ticks , fleas ect are no fun. |

My dogs and cats all have tick collars on. They last for the full tick season even if they get wet and work out cheaper. Only had one tick on Leos at the start of the season before I put the collars on and one on one of the cats when she lost hers.
I used Virbac this year but last year they had a different brand. Can't remember the name. |

First Post!
After enjoying our first GSP "Libby" 5-6 mo we are finally official here. Living in the North East, Ticks (and deer ticks) are a big problem, and having lost our last dog to liver failure- trying to keep things natural if possible.
Max2-
So, after doing some research decided to try essential oils to Libby instead of Frontline etc. So far, for two months seems to be working great. I also bought a preventic collar to use if needed but have not needed yet... |

I switched to Preventic collars. In the past I only used Frontline but after having a dog come down with Lymes, 3 years later with Ehrlichia and then testing positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever I don't trust any of the topicals any more.

Couldn't fund the original post, but here's the recipe care of Unowhoandwhy:
Tick Repellent for Dogs
Never use essential oils on cats, but this blend has been effective on my dog for years. Ticks seem to dislike the minty / herby / woody scents the most. Always use a water-based solution for fur.
* 15 drops tea tree essential oil * 15 drops lavender essential oil * 10 drops cedarwood essential oil * 4 oz. distilled water
Always shake well before applying, and avoid your dog's face. Spray liberally elsewhere and repeat as needed. My dog has never gotten a tick while wearing this blend and it smells fabulous. http://www.diylife.com/2008/04/22/the-scentual-life-insect-repellents-with-essential-oils/
Bug Spray for Dogs & People
What you'll need:
* A spray bottle * Water * Lemongrass Essential Oil * Eucalyptus Essential Oil * Lavender Essential Oil * Peppermint Essential Oil
You want to mix your oils in this proportion: 1 drop lemongrass: 1 drop eucalyptus: 2 drops lavender: 1 drop peppermint
If you only have a 2oz spray bottle, that recipe is just fine. If you have a 4oz spray bottle, double everything. For a 10oz spray bottle, multiply everything by five. Shake well and spray liberally over arms, legs, and body.
You can add a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol to your mixture to help the oils stay mixed into the water.
THIS SPRAY IS NOT FOR USE ON THE FACE. Essential oils are concentrated plant essences. Even diluted in the water and misted, you want to keep them away from your eyes.
