We are having problems with Zoe sleeping for more than 6 hours at night. She is about 1 1/2 now. We bring her out to potty at 10 pm and she will wake us at 4 am. I know she can hold it for more than 6 hours. I bring her to the park for some play time and a 2 mile run in the afternoon. During the day she either goes to my parent's house or I bring her to day care. At my parents she spends the entire day outside running around chasing squirrels and birds. She sleeps on her bed beside our bed. After I bring her out to potty at 4 am she will go straight back to sleep. We try to ignore her and sometimes she will go back to sleep but it will only be for about a half hour then up again. Any suggestions for us getting more sleep or is this normal?

She is training you to get up when she wants to get up. To change the behavior you have to stop reacting. That's hard because they will keep trying especially if they have been successful in the past. So to fix this you have to ignore her and not get up until you are ready to get up. You will have several painful mornings, but if you are strong you will eventually fix the problem.

Luna used to do the same thing thinking she could fool us that she "needed to go outside", she just turned 2. She sleeps in the living room on her own dog bed but would come whining and scratch at our bedroom door. It got exhausting...so we decided to sleep with earplugs for a few nights and it was that quickly that she realized we weren't going to get up at 3 or 4 am for her and she could wait until 6:30 or 7 when we got up. Worked well for us, and now I literally have to make her get up to go out to pee! Earplugs, until you're ready to get up at a normal time would be my idea

Thanks for the advice. I have been trying to ignore her but my husband will get up with her when he's home. This morning she woke me up at 3 and I ignored her for about 30 minutes then she went back to sleep in her bed which lasted until 5. She doesn't jump in the bed to wake us up. She just sits, stares and whines at the side of the bed. Tonight I will try the earplugs.

I was basically gonna say she is set in that routine of getting up at 4am... mine are set to get up at 6am which isn't fun on the weekends... sometime I get lucky and they go till 7am!!!!

Yep she is set in that routine and ignoring her would be the best way to stop it. On the weekends I am not up until around 9. Both dogs go out at 9 or 10 p.m. the night before. Windsor will snooze in his bed as long as I am in our bed. He's like a teenager that just wants to sleep all day (he can be wild at night). Velvet will wake me up early - around 5 a.m. and on week days I don't get up until 6:30 for work. She sticks her face right up to mine and starts licking it. I just throw all the covers over my head and ignore her. Sometimes she comes up on the bed but I still ignore her and she'll settle down. She only does this a couple of times a week now.

I think I have the opposite issue - either I'm really lucky or I have two lazy GSPs! They both sleep with me and they are all the way under the covers at my feet. I tend to keep the bedroom pretty cool both in the summer & winter and I don't think they are big fans of that. During the week my alarm goes off at 5:15 and I get up and have to coax them out from under the covers to go pottie, then they run right back in and get back up under the covers till I'm done showering and once again they need coaxing to go get their breakfast and then it's back under the covers. The weekends are great because they'll sleep until I get up - sometimes it can be 7:30 other times it can be 9:00 am and they are content to just stay under the covers.

I sleep in earplugs because I have no one, but now two snorers sawing logs in my ears. They help me tolerate both my husband, and allow Bella to continue to sleeping in the bed Now, I'm utterly used to them and use them even if the two are out at camp for the weekend. The kind I use are called sleepeaze. They are purple and I get them at Wal-mart. They really do not bother me one bit, and I wear them nightly with no irritation.

Rocky gets up early with his Daddy. Has his breakfast, time out in back yard to do his business. Then he comes back in my bed and sleeps in till I get up around 8:30 am. I walk him at 10 am for 1 half hour. Then I do stuff for a while. Again at 1 pm I take him on a leash walk round our block. When we come back . I tell him , Mom is going to work and Rocky is going to stay. Then he lays down and sleeps until his Dad gets home from his work aorund 5pm. Rocky then goes on a good field run with his Dad . He feeds Rocky his supper. Rocky goes to bed around 8pm until I wake him up at 11;30PM OR MIDNIGHT To go out side to potty. We have him in quite a pattern . I think all of our dogs adjust to our work life style schedules. just like our children we raise do.

Yeah!!! I actually got to sleep until 5:50 this morning. I heard her get up and whine about 3 but totally ignored her. Then I woke up at 5:50 to find her laying on the floor next to my bed. Once i got out of bed she was very excited to say the least. I took her outside to potty, she had breakfast and crawled into my bed. She was still sleeping in my bed when i left for work. It's funny how she will sleep in her own bed but when we get out of our bed, she jumps right in. Now hopefully tonight my husband will ignore her.

I find ignoring a dog is one of the most powerful training tools. Glad to hear that she's adapting. Mine has adapted to sleep in until 9 although sometimes he wakes us up early if he really has to pee, puke, or has runny poo - which I really don't mind getting up for!
