A couple of weeks ago Hanna  let me grind her nails without too much resistance . A few days ago we tried again and even less resistance . We even had her paws in front of her .

Boy did I throw a party  each time! She knows how happy it made me.

About 4 months ago she would scream  and fight me when Id try to clip her nails . So I had to take her to Pet smart . The woman there could do  very little and said I'd have to have a Vet put her under.  Her nails continued to get longer.

I took her back to Pet smart another time and Three women  were able to get two paws done .    Another attempt  a month later and Two women were able to get  two paws done .

So When she let me do It I was beside myself !

This is a major trust break through for us . Hanna is turning out to be  more than I could hope for in so many areas.

So don't give up when they are the most resistant.

Congrats!  I know the feeling.  We hit the same milestone this week.  After weeks of playing with our pups paws, I was finally able to trim them myself this weekend.  He cried a bit, but nothing like before.

Which is why as a breeder I start using a Dremel on my puppies from the very beginning. I have a special low power battery driven Dremel that works well for puppies. When they go home the owners get a dremeling lesson if they don't know how to use one. I even had a few bring puppies back a couple of times until they got comfortable doing nails themselves.

Glad to that hanna is getting used to it.

It's taken us a year to get our Brittany's nails down, to recede her quick. I had a happy moment when she walked around without the sound of her nails clicking the floor.

I'd like to give the Dremel a try.

This is one of the best articles I have found on dremeling.  I don't clip mine at all, but use a dremel once a week to keep my dogs nails short.

That's great. Unfortunately, Lucy was 11mos. when I first fostered her, so no puppy start to nails. Lucy will let me use the clippers and is just fine with that. However, for over a year now, I have not been able to use the Dremel on her nails. She just jerks and yanks and has a fit. Funny part is that when I do Baron and Shreks nails, half the time she will be laying with her head on their back. I do them while they're lying on the floor.
One of these days, it WILL happen. :-)

Awesome breakthrough. I have done Bella's with clippers since a pup with lots of treats on hand. She's not a big fan, but tolerates it like a champ. After we clip we file. She gets a treat after each paw. I have never clipped too short, and I think dogs that have experienced that tend to have a bit more hesitation about it.

ckckla - I clip Bella's right where the nail starts to curve as the before in the bulk of the nail is the quick. Her back ones rarely need more than a little filing. I save enough room with my clip to allow for filing after to get rid of the ship edges. If you dog has nails that haven't been clipped regularly, you may have a longer quick. If you can inspect your dogs nails in good natural light, you may be able to see the quick area just enough. Bella's are black nails, but in the right lighting, I just make out where her quick ends.

I clip nd then dremel. Leos loves it, the new pup lets me do it but Baira used to be a nightmare. 1 nail a day and that took 10 mins.
