I have a couple questions for the experts on here. 1) how long should I feed the puppy formula food or what age should I start weening her over to adult formula? 2) I was wondering what others recommend feeding? The breeder I got her from give me a 20# bag of what he has used for years for all his puppies, she seems to really like it, I was finally able to find it and buy more, it is called showtime premium puppy 30/20. I have read mixed reviews on the net about showtime, which I am positive it is all 100% true since its on the net (lol).

Thanks

barry

I now use Purina Pro Plan Performance for all my dogs including my puppies. I plan to use it with my next litter as well. I have used a variety of the high quality foods out ther for puppies and at this point I think for the price, the ease of access and how well my dogs are doing Performance is a great food.

As for when to switch your puppy, that is really up to you. You can do it now as long as you switch to an all life stages food, or wait until your puppy is older. Try comparing an adult performance food to your puppy food and you will find that the protein and fat as well as other ingredients are almost the same.

I agree with TB that as long as it's an all life stage food you should be good. You won't want to keep them on puppy formula after 10 months or so as it can cause their bones to grow big but not very dense, which can lead to bone breaks later in life. It doesn't really matter what food you feed them, as long as the dog does well on it and likes it. I feed Rowdy Taste of the Wild and he seems to be doing very well on it and loves the food.

Texas Belle,

I hear some bad things about Purina such as dogs getting sick, losing weight, developing itchy bumps and weaker bodies due to bad batches from this company.

I did some research while looking for dog food for my puppy and found a lot of horrible complaints about Purina, the company seems to have a very bad reputation, and very shady practices as I have read complaints where the company agreed to pay for customers vet bills when threatened with lawsuits for dog ilnesses.

I also looked up the ingredients, there was an analysis and Pro Plan has about 12 controversial ingredients, mostly by-product garbage from slaughterhouse waste.

I had someone else grab dog food, and they got a couple bags of Purina Smart Blend and my boy ate 1-2 bowls but I took him right off it after researching and now I have him on Orijen for puppies as it is great quality canadian fresh made food and not processed in high quanitity by big corporations.

Thanks for the info, but I have not had any issues with their Performance product. I also know many field people that use it with good results. There are issues with just about every product out there and for now since I have not had any issues and neither has anyone I know, I plan to keep feeding Performance. The other brand I have used quite a bit is Wellness (Old Mother Hubbard) and it worked well, but my dogs had looser stools with it. Also, when you are feeding 4 or 5 shorthairs it gets pretty expensive. So, I just keep a watch out for changes and any notices and make decisions based on that information.

If you have anything specific on Purina Pro Plan Performance that is within the last year I would be very interested in seeing a link. Can you post that please? Thanks!

I have reead some bad reviews on several different brands that has been suggested, thats the reason for me asking about the type of food everyone is using or their suggestions. I think any brand is going to have some bad reviews.

I use Purina Pro Plan Performance too... I tried several brands... some of the expensive no grains and some of the top of the review list, most of those gave my dogs loose stools and bad gas, plus hurt my pocketbook! I finally I tried a purina product but one of their better ones... I know Purina has so many different products... mine you can not buy in the grocery store I have to get it at Farm and Fleet... I think every brand is going to have some issue at some point in time... you need to figure out what you can afford and what works for your dog....

Agree. No offense to Purina buyers, whatever works for your dogs. In my research I found there is a lot of people whose dogs love it and do great on it so really it's not a big deal which food you buy. I just get a little wary about these corporations and their motives.

I'm thinking about putting my guy on a raw prey-model diet when he's older because it's complete nutrition for a carnivore animal.

Look up BARF (Bones And Raw Food) and Prey-model Raw diet for dogs if you are interested.

Another thought is these bigger companies have more qualified people monitoring their product as it comes off production. I am on my second shorthair in my life & must say they both did well on Purina products.

I have no doubt raw would be very healthy for the dogs... it isn't practical for me... especially when we go camping... it is hard enough to keep our food stored in the fridge/freezer and coolers to try and keep the dogs would be impossible... even at home it would be hard... however I will every now and then give them a raw boneless chicken breast or some ground beef... they do get eggs on their food now and then and yogurt... I even give them veggies, they like carrots!

I just try to be as healthy for them as I can for my lifestyle...
