My brother (whom I have not seen in quite a while) and his family which includes 2 fur babies are moving and I happen to be about the half way point to their new home. I have offered for them to come and stay with me this weekend as their new home won't be ready to move into until Monday. So here is my question - any suggestions on how to introduce their dogs to mine. Archer and Zoe are very well socialized with other dogs since they go to day camp twice a week - but this is at camp not on their turf. My brother's dogs, Daffney & Chloe, are mixed breed rescues about the same age as Archer & Zoe and according to them have very sweet dispositions, although one of them is a little timid and shy and not as outgoing as the other one. They did say they both have seperation anxiety if they are not with each other. Should I introduce them in the house or in the fenced in backyard? On leashes? One at a time? Or Zoe & Archer together and introduce their dogs one at a time? I would love any suggestions! Thanks! Danielle

Definately leashed. Better to do it on neutral turf. I usually do introductions in the back-yard, but the front yard might work better.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

I would take them all walking together. Then when you get back you will have an idea of how well they are doing. You might be able to just let them into the backyard at that time. If not, walk them into the backyard together on leash and let them sniff each other, then I would let them off leash. The two visitors will have to establish their position in the pack so expect some give in take in their getting to know each other. I would leave them alone, unless something looks like it might escalate, then step in put a stop to it.

You are dealing with 2 two dog packs. I would take everyone away to a park or somewhere not "owned" by your dogs. I would also prefer to have them meet off leash. If the dogs travel in crates, give one dog to your brother in his car and you take one in your car and go to the neutral area.

I think you have to know the dogs... I had a dog (my boxer) that would attack other dogs if she was on a leash but off leash she was always fine...

Have you ever had dogs over to your yard before? That might be the best indicator o how your two feel about a visitor. Bugsy thinks that any dog in his yard is there for a playdate, same if they come in the house. He is happy to meet on leash - we go to various events that have tons of dogs- but he would rather be able to move freely. I know him well enough to know he would just walk away from a dog he didn't like, on leash that ability to leave is removed and to me that is when dogs are more stressed. So if you do on-leash intros be aware of body language and give space if someone wants it

Thanks for all the suggestions. They were supposed to arrive around 3:30 pm on Friday but typical of my brother they arrived at 8:30 pm, so a walk was out of the question and I didn't want to put them in the back yard since it was dark. I put Zoe and Archer outside and had my brother come in with his dogs on a leash and then had Zoe come in and meet them and then Archer. I was very proud of both of them - they did absolutely great! Archer, Chloe, Daffney & Zoe
