The whole question about do I get another is tough... I knew I always wanted 2 dogs one for each of my kids... I wanted them close in age too so that they went through the life stages together.... didn't want a puppy bugging an older dog, plus I knew my one son would be mad not having a dog while my other son did... though when we lost Donner to whatever caused his kidney failure we did think we would wait a year just for financial reasons... however we had a unique situation come up and we jumped on it... Striker didn't replace Donner he just was a blessing!

I have always had multiple dogs and have always gotten a new pup pretty quickly after I lose a dog. I have never thought of the new puppy as a replacement, and their personalities have all been so different anyway. For me because a new puppy is so demanding it helps me to think about something else at a time when it would be really easy to dwell on the negative. So, I do understand the desire as I think puppies just help you heal.

I have had that urge about getting another pet when I've lost one and I have always done it. When I did, the pet I would get would look and act completely different than my beloved pet I lost. Sometimes it took a while and once it took 1 day. I had a cat, a Maine Coon, that I had for years. She went through her 9 lives and kept on living - she had incidents all the time as she was indoor/outdoor. Once she climbed up a tree and got stuck for 3 days so my husband cut the tree down w/ her in it - a huge tulip tree. She came tumbling down still clutched to it and bit her tongue and cracked some teeth - she lived after the vet yanked her teeth and gave her some pain killers - she basically gummed all her food. Things like this would happen to her all the time but the last time something in the woods got her. She came home, seemed to act odd by hiding behind furniture and the next day we could see her injury - very very infected. Unfortunately we had to put her down. The very next day my girlfriend offered me her cat because she got a service dog for her son who has a very serious case of Autism and she wanted to focus on her son and the new dog. Her son almost killed the cat a few times by smothering it or pushing it out of windows. So she came to stay with us. All was well with Windsor when we got him but not with Velvet so I gave the cat to a friend who has 4 others. But when I got this cat, she was totally different than my Maine Coon and she needed a home so I said, why not? Both our dogs were not intended at all. We were waiting to find a gsp pup but not in a rush - talking a year or so out. But things happened and Windsor needed a home and a year later I found Velvet on Craig's list for free. So sometimes things present themselves when you least expect it and there's nothing wrong w/ giving another home to an animal that needs one :) I am very sorry for your loss. I still think of my pets that passed away, I still miss my black lab from years ago but I think of the crazy happy times I had with him and now I've got gsps - who would have thought. I remember my husband saying to me - are you sure? Then he made me read about them online - about how hyper they are. Well yup - I was sure and very glad we have our two :)

Forgot to add.... We came by GSP's quite by accident.  We were not planning to get another dog after Abby passed, as we still had 2 others, and getting another dog so soon, for us, just seemed out of place.  We were thinking we might want another chocolate lab, but were afraid we would compare the two  and might not like the character of the new puppy because we were so in love with everything about Abby.    My husband sold hunting gear to a breeder who just happened to have GSP's!!  Who would have thought!!   This was only 2 months after the loss of Abby.  We have never looked back!  We got Maybrie, and then 2 months later, her brother littermate brother.   It worked out super well that they were already fairly potty trained and fully kennel trained!  Our dogs were 10, 12, and 5....getting a puppy would not have been good for us!   Out of practice for too long!    I would tell you to trust your instincts and to go with your heart.  You had room for 2 before, you will have room for 2 now.......and the wonderful fun memories will always be around!

Well, decided to go and look at two 3 month olds tomorrow. A boy and a girl. We got Leos and Baira at 15 and 16 weeks so I don't mind that they are not tiny pups. Plus we will move to Canada at the end of December/beginning of January and a pup of 8 weeks now will only just be 3 and half months or so when it will need to travel. I know it's fine for them to travel at that age but I think it will be better if it's a little older. Will let you know.

So hard to make all these decisions, plus a move. I'll be thinking of you! Where in Canada are you moving Kerry?

So sorry for the loss of your Girl. She sounded so sweet. It is always tough to say a final good-bye to our dogs when they have no quality of life to live on. My deep sympathy and prayers go to you and your family. Best wishes on your move and choice of new puppy.

My husbands office will be on the outskirts of Toronto but we plan on living as far away from Toronto as we can but still with in a reasonable travelling distance from the office.

Ahh ... more than a quick visit from me. We live near Ottawa so about 5 hours away. But there are LOTS of GSP and horse people down in that area ... :)

I came home with a 4 month old female this evening. Her name is Kassi. She is the tiniest 4 month old GSP I have ever seen, she weighs 7kg. She's not skinny, just so tiny. Apparently her mum had a small litter 6/7 years ago, then two normal litters and this was another small litter (her last litter), almost like they were born 1 month early but they weren't. All 8 pups were tiny and she was the smallest of them all. 1 sister and 1 bother were also available so I saw they were small too. The lady said the last small litter grew to normal size GSP's but i'm not fussed if she doesn't.

Will post a picture soon.

She has by no means filled Bairas place, she is a new dog not a replacement. I still feel a tug at my heart when I think of her but 2 dogs was always the plan.

Congratulations on the new addition!! Can't wait to see pictures. In my last litter I had a little female that was half the size of the others. She ended up with my mom and dad so I see her regularly. She grew up to be the same size as one of the other girls and a tad smaller than the girl I kept, but she is the biggest handful of the three girls. The little ones usually are the scrappiest. Enjoy your new baby. I would expect her to be about the size of the parents. How is she doing with Leos?

Just took these on my phone will do some more tomorrow.

They seem to be getting on fine. She has no problem with him nd he's been very tolerant of her biting his legs and pulling his ears.
