I've been encouraged to wait on spaying Nixie until after her first heat but I recently had to move back in with my parents. My Mom is adamant that I spay her now. She just turned 6 months. I've been trying to convince my Mom that it's better to wait so I'm asking to see if you guys have any credible sources to use to validate my position? I would greatly appreciate it!

This is a good article that gives pros and cons.

http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTermHealthEffectsOfSpayNeuterInDogs.pdf

My general observation with shorthairs when spayed at 6 months their bones continue to grow beyond what they would had the bitch been left intact. This is due to the lack of the female hormones which would normally stop the bone growth. The result is the bitch will be leggier and be prone to muscular injuries. These injuries are results of the extra strain put un the muscles and tendons due to the longer bones.

Excellant, thanks Texas Belle! I thought you might be able to help in this matter. I'm back in the area so I'll have to attend a meeting sometime!

Its a challenge but I'm glad I waited with  Hanna .  I had Hannas predecessor spayed at 6 mos and she had spay incontinence.    Course it could still be a "crap shoot " ( No pun intended....)  because research is not perfect. Check out

the thread " Maturity is here."
