Hanna was named by her breeder and I desided to keep that name because it means  " favored by God "  or Grace. To me Grace means the gift of time or timing . How we respond to various calls or callings in our lives . Many times they are those still  small   soundless voices  we call intuition .

My brother suffered heart failure  the day after  Labor day . He was in a library snoring loudly disturbing some people . A librabrian went to ask her boss who was in a meeting.what to do about him.  When She got back  she said he was still snoring but she could not wake him.then he stopped breathing.  A nurse was near by and the fire department  happened to be in the building checking the sprinkler system . Still in all their  efforts he never regained conciuosness and  suffered  neuro toxic shock.

I took Hanna with me  . I spent a week of  funeral directors . police stations, lawyers, and running on  three hours sleep a night, sorting through a year and a half of unopened mail in a hoarded  filled two story house and basement  filled with boxes of   paper books magazines all things paper and electronics  from 1987 , along with  leaking toilets, faucets that didn't run ,and mouse nests in the couch and else where.  Turns out he has 330,000 dollars of debt and paying  8,000 a year in taxes on his house thats in  poor enough condition  it may be worth half its taxed value.  A life insurance policey  with my Father as benificiay who died in 1990 and  has a loan against it shy of 400.00  of the policeys value.  The debt consists of two morgages and a 83,000 dollar home equity loan that was not used on the house. and credit cards.

I'm already  5,000 dollars in debt. for his burial  and a lawyers retainer fee  at 275. Hr .   and now have to go through the painful decision of  probating as insolvent  (depending on what the realator  says  the house  will  sell for( as she wades through the boxes).  or walking away.  My brother was an electrical engineer  who made 95,000 a year. .

Hanna had a blast chewing on plastic  to- go containers she'd find in a box  .She was the light in the darkness., Clown  for the down trodden.

So Yesterday I was at work out in the country at a place I can let her run wild.  I let her go with a bell on her collar and went about my work. She'd pass by  from time to time to show me her finds , mostly empty plastic flower pots she loves to toss about  . It was aroud 5:00 pm when she pranced over tossing a small black plastic box in the air . I grabbed it only to find it was a  chewed through empty "Protecta"  bait station for mice.  She then brought me another one .  She had gotten them out of my clients garage.  So In rush hour traffic  I called my Vet  .. They closed at six  so they directed me to the emergency vet. clear on the other side of town.    Fortunately I took her to a Vet Hospital 15 Minutes away , They had 45 minutes to spend on her . She hurled up about two cups   They then had her drink charchol and  then vitamin K.  she went through  her 24Hr  watch without a glitch. I had to set an alarm to check her every two hours .  Shes her old prancing self  today ,  So I believe time was on  her side .

If she had not brought me  her yummy prize  she would  have suffered a horrable death. I can't explain  the  emotion I have  of watching her so happily toss those bait stations in  the air so unaware  of what she had consumed. They are so in the moment . "Okay The hurling was intresting whats next?  "

I can't explain it but we have been like Glue .  She and I and the Vet saved her life  . I will  know by Tuesday If her blood is clotting okay.  The effects  of decon last a month so she will be on the Vitimin K for 30 days.

The Vet said the bait staion  is supposed to be pet proof.

They state its pet resitant and have a disclaimer yet they make these bait  stations to look like landscape rock

.Here is a link to Protecta. The ones  she chewed through was the triangle on the right.

I ust noticed they state this ..

Tamper proof bait stations are ideal to use around children and pets

You  all give your precious  babies huge hugs today.

Thank you so much for posting the link for Protecta, but I'm so sorry to hear about
your brother and everything you've been going through since. I would have to say that your Hanna, aka Grace, has been the light in your darkness. Bless Hanna and bless you for having the strength to work through this unfortunate situation and loss.

They are special, and mine too have helped me through the hard times. I am so happy Hanna brought you her prize and there was a vet nearby. I am certain this special girl is on the road to a full recovery. And just a word of experience, there is nothing shorthairs can't get into. They are just way too smart and strong.

So sorry for your brother, but thankfully you had Hannah to help you through the sad times.  So glad too you were able to save her life from the terrible death of rat poison.

No doubt GSPs are special.  Not long after I got my most recent GSP puppy, Java, my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  I thought my gosh what I am I going to do with a puppy with all this turmoil in my life.  Well, now I wonder how I would have made it through those tough times without this silly girl making me laugh.  Ours is a happy ending as my husband was cured with the Whipple procedure they can do for early stages of pancreatic cancer.  It has been 19 months and he is still cancer free.

Keep us posted on Hannah and I hope she continues to be her silly GSP self.

Roz.

Hi Roz,

Here I am struggling with  what to say In response to your husbands  Not to be expected recovery  and I'm a survivor myself .

How about . The more serious the cancer  the sweeter the  thriving .  Yea!

The Vet called this morning with Hannas blood work and It was  NORMAL!  That meant not much got absorbed  and they were able to  get  most of it out and contained. Sounds like what doctors tell a cancer patient after thier surgery .

Hanna, Stage 1 rodenticide . NED !  We were very happy today .   Thanks for all the kind words.

I'm so happy to hear that Hannah is okay.   These little babies are like children.  They innocently go through life and are always just so happy and carefree....it's a blessing to watch them grow in happiness and to be by their side.  SO happy Hannah decided to share in her fun.  What another blessing.

On that note, I'm SO sorry to hear about your brother, and all the mess that he left you to deal with, on top of the sorrow.  That must be really hard.  My thoughts and prayers are with you, and with Hannah, that her  clotting levels will remain within normal limits.  Keep us posted.

Thanks also for posting about the bait.  My parents live in the country, and they had a wonderful little barn cat.  He was one of 4, the other 4 never lasted a year due to wild life.  However, B.J. was super smart, and she lived 4 years until she got ahold of some poison.  We do not think she ate the poison, rather a rat or mouse that ingested the poison.  We are not certain that's what happened, but she had all the symptoms of a poisoning. It was very sad. THat was one happy and smart barn cat who will be missed for years to come.   My parents have 4 indoor cats, but B.J. was different. She preferred the barn!  She LOVED to come get in our laps and play with us, but she wouldn't come in the house.  The barn was her house!

I am so sorry about your brother but very happy Hannah is going to be okay! And Roz I am so happy to hear your husband has been cancer free! If we don't have our health - we have NOTHING.

Yes these dogs are very special. These are my first gsp's (husband had them before) and ours are rescues with many quirks but they love us unconditionally and are always by our side.

A wise warning to all about the pesticide. Glad to hear that that Hanna is okay. I think your brother was looking out for her.
