I'm looking for some advice how to introduce a new GSP puppy to our three-year-old GSP (male). My husband and I decided that it's time for a second dog. We met our new puppy today. He's six weeks old and super cute!! But due to a lot of travel we have coming up we won't be bringing him home til mid-November. He will be ~12 weeks when we introduce him to Ziggy. Any advice how to go about it would be appreciated! Needless to say, although very well-behaved and obedient Ziggy, he still thinks the world revolves around him... a typical only child. We really would like to avoid any avoidable mistakes. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences. Thnx
I always intro mine in my backyard. I keep the puppy on a leash and let the other run loose. That way the older dog can sniff the pup, but they can also get away from the puppy too. You can also take them both for a walk together. I suspect you won't have any issues with the two. GSPs are very social and usually get along together. Just be sure you take some special one on one time with your first dog. I would also do things like give your first dog treats first, and when you put down their dinner put your first dogs down first. Also, if the pup is still eating three meals a day give your first dog a snack when you feed the pup.
and welcome to the forum. Can't wait to see Picts of both your dogs.
thanks for all the great advice! I will be posting photos of Ziggy (3-year-old) and Teo the puppy in a few weeks. We're so excited to expand our canine family. But waiting for him til November will be killing me... I also wonder if it would have been better to bring a younger puppy home. When we pick him up he will be 3 months old. The breeder is a wonderful guy, so I don't worry about that part, but I wonder if the age of the puppy will matter when Ziggy meets him... thanks again for your reply!
