I have owned GSPs for the last 30+ years as pets. I have 3 of my own. For the last 4 years I have been involved with GSP rescue. It has given me the opportunity to see and be involved with a lot of wonderful dogs.
More and more I see GSP that have the look coloring and personality of the English Pointers. They are lighter in color, more lightly built, faster, a bit less rugged, have more stamina, they range further from you, they seem to have more a mind of their own; a few even behave more like a Fox Hound than GSP.
Please don't get me wrong I like them just as much. Just as wonderful, But...
These new dogs resemble less what I considered the classic GSP that I saw in the past, and still prevalent in Europe.
I have herd someone refer to these as 'American Pointer'
Question is:
Am I just imagining?
Are more breeders selecting for this new look because it has become popular?
Any opinions?
I am new here so if this has been discussed, please 'point' me in the right direction.

Steve - what part of the country are you in? In TX the shorthairs still look like shorthairs for the most part. I see dark to medium liver and white with various degrees of ticking and patching. I am seeing more that are straight in the front and long in the rear, but bone and size seem to be pretty consistent. Some think the shorthairs are getting bigger, but I am not convinced of that. I am seeing lighter eyes, but still enough with the nice dark eyes. So no, I can't say I have seen what you describe.

You have beautiful animals.   Thanks for the answer.

I am in the Dallas area and belong to GSP rescue of TX.
We have several members in Austin.

As a matter of fact, the last foster I had,  was just adopted by a couple from Austin.

Thank you! I am pretty proud of my gang. I don't get too directly involved with rescue because I would have a way too hard a time in letting any of them go. So, instead I donate to rescue. So, maybe that is why I am not seeing what you are seeing. The shorthairs I see are at shows, hunt tests, etc. I would be curious where some of these dogs are coming from?
