As most know by now, I have two 11 month old GSP's.....and POWER chewers. I have purchased 4 beds for them, and they have chewed everyone of them up. I have narrowed it down to WHEN, and it's ONLY when they are bored. They can really only tolerate kennels at night when no action is going on. Today, this morning, I told my husband to take their bedding out if he leaves to go anywhere, and just put them in their kennels without bedding. He didn't listen because he THOUGHT they got enough stimulating play and exercise this morning. He also said they were SOUND ASLEEP when he left. 45 minutes later, he returned and BOTH chewed up their bedding.
Mine get cold without bedding. Maybrie will shiver, which is NOT okay for a GSP. Has anyone tried the Kong bed? It says it's indestructibel. We have tried the cots, and other softer beds covered in protective layers of waterproof zipper pads, thinking that would deter them. I have even sprayed their bed with the apple spray. It doesn't work. Kaido watches her destroy her bed and then decides it looks like fun. Luckily, they don't eat the pieces, they only shred. Still, I have wasted about 400 in dog beds. Do they stop chewing at some point? They do fine at night after I run them, but as I stated before, it is just too hot for a run in the morning, and there are too many cars. Any suggestions? |

| Buy blankets or quilts from Goodwill. If the shred you have not lost much money and there is no stuffing which dogs love to have fun with. |

Good idea. I JUST found this other website for dog beds. It uses that tough cordura nylon and actually ties it to the bottom of the crate, then places pvc piping over that, and ties that to the bed as well. Supposedly, this prevents them from lifting them up. I am not convinced though. My female GSP will see it as a challenge! I'm sure, if she starts ONE little puncture in it, she will have it torn up in no time. She already ripped a cordura nylon , above the ground bed. Is there a point at which they outgrow this need to chew up their beds?
I think the idea of the quilt/blanket is a good idea. She can make a "nest" with it to her liking. I actually looked at some "moving blankets" on amazon, and found 4 for 34.00. They are not very padded, which is actually ideal. My two LOVE blankets, so I have no doubt that any blanket I put in there will end up with holes in them. However, as you pointed out.....who cares!! I purchased their beds ONE last time earlier tonight. I am going to cover it with a piece of curdura fabric, and tie THAT down to the kennel bed. I will also throw a blanket on top as you suggested, so at least they won't be lying on nylon...yuck!! It will still be padded, and they can chew up the blanket instead! HOPEUFLLY! I just want the chewing to stop! Interestinly enough, because we are fairly active with them, they are not really chewers. (Except for recently with Kaido's broken toe and inactivity....poor thing, but I can't blame destruction on him when he's was not able to run off steam). They usually just pick up a sock or a blanket or towel and carry it through the house. No shoes, clothing items, etc....oh, I forgot to add toilet paper!

Windsor has chewed up every single dog bed we have gotten for him. He has one more left to go - a cheap one from Walmart. After that, it's old blankets for him. Velvet behaves and isn't a chewer unless it's an antler |

Like Bev said, Goodwill. Or try Big Lots. I've gotten several full & queen size comforters for $10 because they were on clearance and were ugly patterns. Since they are for the dogs, I don't really care what they look like!!! Now I wouldn't give them a comforter since they are chewers, trust me - there is a ton of stuffing in them! I know this because my dogs have had them for several years and with all the washings they've gone through, they have become somewhat thin and then when they dig in them to make their bed, holes begin to appear. Both of mine find it fun to pull the stuffing out and lay it right outside their kennel door for me to find That being said, my girl was a horrible bed chewer (but only the beds in the crate in the car). I tried the padded bumper beds designed for crates, a piece of supposedly indestructible fleece I bought at a dog show (didn't even last us getting off the show grounds!), and finally cheap blankets I found at walmart and target. Those seemed to work the best. I would just give her a couple of the 50x60 inch fleece throws that were $5 - if she tore them, I threw them out and didn't feel bad. I did that until she outgrew her fetish for dog beds and now she has a queen size blanket in her crate in the car and the comforter in the house. Since they are only 11 months, hopefully they outgrow it, but don't count on it for a couple of years!!! |

Yep.....I just ordered MORE beds for them yesterday, but after reading your post, I think I may put them away for a couple of years. I am thinking about the big blankets more and more. They LOVE blankets, and they LOVE to carry them through the house. I purchased some of the small throw blankets, and while there are a few holes, they remain largely intact.....and this is for the SMALLER throws, like 4x6, or 2x3's doggie throws. They have had one of the throws that has withstood many tug of war games. I hope a larger blanket meant for humans will be that tough. They have larger kennels....Maybrie;s is 42x28, and Kaido's is 48x30. I could put their above ground cots in their kennels, and throw the blankets on top of them. I can try to spray the cots with bitter apple, as I think the cordura will hold the taste.......although it didn't work well after about a week with Kaido and his toe bandage. The main reason for having a large cushion OR cot in the bottom, is to prevent another broken toe. Kaido broke his by getting his toe caught on the horizontal bar at the bottom of the kennel. Whether it happened while he was in the kennel or on his way out if unclear. We just know he got caught up in it, and when he came out, he was limping. The cushions we found fit these "Precision" crates PERFECTLY. They rise above the horizontal bars as well. They had to go and eat them! They lasted 3 weeks! Would you go with a king or queen blanket? I also want them off the bottom because I have come in to their room and seen them BOTH shivering in their sleep due to the cool plastic bottom. I want them to have enough blanket to cover the entire bottom with . This blanket thing is a GREAT idea. We have a Walmart that has SEVERAL blankets for about 10-20 bucks. They have the soft fleece which is their FAVORITE! I wonder if Big Lots will have the fleece as well. We also have a TJMax and Ross. I could check there as well for cheap beds. Thanks for the suggestions! |

gsplover - sounds like you are looking at Kuranda beds. We have them for our dogs. (After Bo destroyed I don't know how many pillows in his crate!). The PVC structure is still solid after more than 4 years for Bo and 3 years for Raz. We have had to replace the fabric twice for Raz (she likes to "dig" in her sleep) and once for Bo. We went to the codura this time instead of the vinyl coated and it does seem much more durable. |

Thanks everbell. This is the bed we were thinking about getting. The dura bed looks great as well. http://www.cushionguy.com/Titan_Bed_System.html
We purchased beds that are similar to kuranda beds, however, they make them a bit differently. We ordered from RoyalCobana sunscreens. You can look it up if you want. I will not be ordering from them again! The fabric runs OVER the pvc piping on all 4 sides, so of course they are going to try to chew it! Maybrie succeeded, and they replaced the fabric once already. Kaido hasn't succeeded because I haven't put his in his crate yet after seeing what Maybrie did to hers! They NEVER chew the beds that are outside of the crate....and they NEVER chew their beds at night during regular sleep time when the house is quiet. They ONLY chew when they know there is action going on, and they weren't invited, OR, they feel we are sleeping in a bit late! I started removing their bedding after I pottie them at 8am when I come in from work. They will survive a couple of hours with no bedding. Either that, or I will take them to bed with me. I put Kaido with my daughter, and Maybrie with me. They will usually lie down and let us sleep for a couple of hours! The bedding I was looking at getting goes a step further than the kuranda beds. I will send you the link. I probably will not purchase them, as they are 150.00 for the one I want.......per bed! If they rip those up, It's a bad deal! They only guarantee for 15 days which is ridiculous! Kuranda, and even Royal Cobana offer 6 month guarantee. Royal Cobana sent us replacement fabric for Maybrie for free. I just had to send them a picture. He even offered to allow her to grow a bit more prior to sending the replacement. I opted to have him send the replacment now......however, I haven't replaced it yet! I don't trust her! I purchased several cheap blankets online last night to throw in there with the dogs. We will try that! I will put the good ones that I just ordered up for a couple of years! Here's the link to the bed I was thinking about. It's called the "titan." |

I can't count how many beds I've been through with Zoe! Someone suggested to me a while back to buy a dog bed that has a removable cover, take the stuffing out and replace it with old sheets or blankets. It works perfect, and it's easy to wash! |

| I think some dogs prefer blankets to actual beds cuz they like to fluff it up and it is when they are trying to fluff a bed that gets them going and into chewing and tearing it up... using the blankets allows them to move stuff around how they want and they don't get frustrated and start chewing and tearing it up... though my friend's dog still did tear up the blankets and even though they weren't comforters with stuffing she shed them up good that she was pooping string for a few days.... |

| I usually buy more than one blanket as the dogs love to rearrange them, so I get the smaller twin or doubles. You can also try folding up a movers blanket and put that on the bottom with a couple of soft blankets on top. The movers blankets are thick and don't slide around. |

Binni has been through five beds in nine months. Don't waste your money on the Kong bed. Binni had a fabulous time tearing that thing apart!! For the last two months she has had a queen size comforter in her crate and she loves it!!!! |

Thanks Binni! That sounds fabulous. Never thought about putting an entire comforter in there! I purchased some cheap plush and microplush blankets that are on super sale. They are always cuddling in ours, so I figured they would enjoy having a couple for themselves in their own crate! They are each going to have 2 blankets and they are 60x80. Hopefully that will be good enough for them! I ended up putting their above ground cots in there to raise them up above those horizontal bars at the bottom of the crate that Kaido broke his toe on. They fit perfectly in their crates, they are just not as comfortable as the 3 inch orthomattresses that fit snuggly and PERFECTLY before they decided to see who could tear his/hers up fastest... They weren't cheap either! I re-ordered them, but thanks to everyone here in the forum, an my brain that finally came to its senses they won't actually get to use it until their 4th birthday!! Lol! They have 3 years to wait! |

Thanks Texas Belle. Yes, I thought about purchasing the moving blankets from Amazon. They have a 4 pack of thinner ones for 37.00. Not bad! I already purchased some plush fleece, each will have 2, 60x80 size. That along with the moving blankets to throw on their cots as padding, they should be set! |
