gsplover in houston Yes, I did misread your post....not sure where I came up with "how long they can live"...I guess it is just so blooming hot here too I was spacing out! No, I definitely don't think you are are being cruel to your dog. Houston (love the city, good friends there, love that seafood, etc, and Reliant shows) but it is a BEAR in the summertime...OMG, my guys are just usually crazy from the humidity, but it is the humidity and not the heat so much. We have heat. LOL! Still, they don't like hanging outside here for very long.

Sounds as if things are going well. I'm as shocked as you are on the 105 temps after only 20 minutes...that is scary! Eeeks! Glad you are hanging in and the guys are getting plenty of quality exercise time.

Take care!

That's okay Las Cruces. I understand!  I misread things all the time as well.  It doesn't help that I have to right a "book" everytime I post!  Lol!  Sorry about that!   How are thing in Las Cruces?  I lived in Alamogordo, NM for 4 years as a teen....many moons ago!   I loved it then, but teens don't care how hot it is, always sunning ourselves!   Yes, Houston IS SUPER HOT!  I was just as shocked in getting the high 105 temps, and to be honest, they cooled down VERY quickly, and did not collapse like they normally do.   I learned my lesson big time, and am SO glad I took their temp.  I have taken it before and gotten 103, but actually that was not right after a ride.  Our black lab accidentally got out the other day.  It was when our two GSP's decided to run their bike route without me or the bike!  luckily they came right back in un a minute and a half.  My husband never caught up with them in the car!  My husband turned right at  the end of our culdesac and  30 seconds later, they came from the left!  My husband didn't close the front door well enough and it came ajar.  I caught it super early, but as soon as I called them they both bolted into a mad dash.   I was getting my bike ready to go try to find them, and no sooner was I ready to go I looked out the window and they were lying in the grassy greenway in our culdesac.  I gave the "here" command and both came immediatly inside!  Anyway, our 12 year old black lab also got out in this mess, but we somehow missed her.  She is usually sleeping in the back room.  2 hours later, I noticed she was missing.  I opened the front door and she was at the front doorstep.  I have never seen a dog so sick in my life.  She was standing, I had to lift her inside and to the north side of the house so I could hose her down in the shade.   There was NO breeze so my efforts were futile.  I hosed her down really well and then brought her in.  Her temp AFTER being hosed down was 107.5.   Her gums were pale.  She has a multitude of issues plus really debilatating arthritis, so my husband and I knew that if we took her to the vet, we would have her put to sleep if they couldn't turn her around.  So, not wanting to do that, we worked feverishly to help her.  It took several minutes, and she FINALLY hit 103 and started drinking water and walking around.   She laid around the house, but when dinner time came she was up and ready!  She never vomited, staggared or anything.  This dog has survived more than 9 lives!  She has eaten a glass plate, 2 rotten chicken carcasses, swallowed something sharp and vomited blood for 3 days.  I gave her pepcid and it cured her.   I honestly think that if she had been outside for 20 more minutes she wouldn't have made it.  I would have felt HORRIBLE.   She is fine now!  No organ damage......brain damage is debateable...but no changes!   Anyway, the point is, it's really hot here in Houston!  I think I am going to resort to playing bubbles with them outside in the morning and night!   They LOVE to chase bubbles almost as much as they love chasing birds!!   It just needs to cool off more.  I hate to think what their temp actually was when they were showing more distress than they were at 105.  Or worse, what their temp was at the dog park when we went for 2 hours from 10-12......off peak hours!   Of course, they had the shade, the pool, and could stop and start at their comfort level.  I am happy that they do have their own limit and off switch, and that I am learning to read it.  At first, I thought they were just being lazy to only have a 5-10 minute super charge burst of energy and then NOTHING but  a trot afterwards.....now I know!!  They were saying STOP! I'M REALLY HOT, MOMMY!!  Poor pups.
