So we have an underground fence for Dunkan. it covers about 4 acres. it separates our lawn from the woods. it usually works great and we haven't had to use if the entire summer... not so much anymore!! i started working Dunkan on live birds about 3 weeks ago to get ready for the season. i do not work him around our house, but miles away on some land my parents own. Well, now we have a large group of Grouse living (at least 10 last of them Wednesday) in the woods just off my lawn. my woods/lawn is littered with apple trees and berry bushes. Having grous near by for hunting season is great! But not so great right now, as it is just temptation for the pup! he runs up and down the treeline with his nose in the air whining... stopping to point for a while, then back to running! once he musters up the courage, it's off through the fence, he takes the shock, and into the woods and the birds disperse and he goes crazy! he's great on recall while we're hunting, but not so much when this happens. my better half or myself often will find him down the road with his nose on the ground or playing with our neighbors beagle! i don't know how to repremand him... if at all! after all, he's donig what i want him to do, by finding birds. but not what i want him to do by not listening to me! i'm unsure how to handle him when he comes back... usually he does on his own! what do you all think? should he be repremanded or not? how would some of you handle it?? sorry to be long winded!
if i see him getting excited i can call him over to me and he'll come, but many times i'm on the other side of the house/yard and can not see him. before i know it he's in the woods. i don't really have an option for a real fence... way too much land to cover... and i don't wanna look at one! i am thinkng about an e-collar. i'm sure that would help!
