Hi,

Nixie's 4.5 months now and I was just wondering what I should be expecting around her age in regards to training skills? She's sitting, staying and coming pretty well with slight distractions but if there are any new stimuli and major activity she doesn't listen too well. Is that to be expected at her age? She's also horrible at jumping up on others. She's doing much better with me (still working on it), but if there are new people around she's all on them and won't listen to me well. It's probably me but I didn't want to expect too much if these are issues that just take time and persistence. Any suggestions on teaching jumping is not ok?

Thanks so much!

it is hard to say where a dog should be at a certain age... it depends on the dog and the owner... I would think that you can get a bit stricter in the jumping up on others... if you don't nip that in the bud early on it can be an issue later....

So everything you are experiencing is normal. At that age and generally until they are about 2 years their focus can be an issue. So, one thing you can do to help is train focus. You can also expect her attention span and focus to get worse, not better for about 5 0r 6 more months. Don't make a big deal about it, but work through it. Remember if you can't reinforce a command, do not give it as you will be training her to blow you off.

As for jumping, I start when they are babies and do not let them jump. What I try to anticipate the jump and prevent it before it happens, but if I miss and my dog jumps I grab there front feet and squeeze gently until they pull back and then I release them. They hate that and will pull back and it usually stops the problem quickly. When visitors come I never let the dog get to the jumping on visitors level. I either make them sit or put them in a crate until they settle down and can great the person nicely.
