Well, I have headed back to my seasonal day job after a couple months home with Bella. Daily beach/hike outtings...momma's little shadow. Someone...I won't say who...decided to take it out on the feather couch pillow.
It's her first instance of destroying something that isn't hers (toys and beds)...but, she looks so darn pleased with herself I can't be mad. She is 11 months as of yesterday so I suppose one pillow isn't a bad track record.

My husband texted me this picture as I was in Northern WI at the time. At first, I was slightly mad...but then I saw her face LOL.

Not cool, but then again, look at that face... pure contentment.

Ya, this is why ours' are crated when we aren't home. They would likely be okay 99% of the time, but it's that 1% that worries me.

How can you be mad at that face? She missed you and the pillow suffered for it.

Awww, can't be mad at that face, mom. If that's the first, I'd say she been doing very well,
just missed mom.

I've considered myself lucky with Lucy. Only lost the corner of one throw pillow, and those who remember, she did have some separation anxiety when I first got her at 11mos.

Oh my!!! LOL can't tell you how many times we came home to a snowstorm when B was a pup - although he would just destroy whatever was in his crate LOL
Look at that face though - she had some great fun (<= this won't be the last pillow that dies!)
She is just used to being active and was bored, from 8-15 months Bugsy's energy level was NUTS and boredom potential was very high

It's Bugsy's world...

Feathers everywhere when I got home. Funny how I got the honor of being the one to clean it up :) she also just got the corner of this one. Salvageable, but won't be the same lol.

She has been doing great out of kennel. She did ok the first day, but I had to go overnight the second day back so I think when I didn't come home at all she got frustrated. Yesterday I took her for a long hike (crazy mad run through the woods for her). She was pumped. Caught her first chippy and I swear her eyes bugged out of her head because she shocked even herself catching it (only dead ones she has had in her mouth). When I told her to drop it it ran away, so se had a nice soft bite (good news for the hubbs future bird kills) ;)

Hoping I won't come home to many more feathers :) I'd rather her take out a shoe than my favorite couch pillow! (hmmm I better take that back, careful what you wish for)

Looks like she is saying, "Look at me! Aren't you Proud?!" I love the pic but feel bad for the furniture. So far Velvet has not done anything like that but when Windsor gets bored or inquisitive he has shredded things. We don't have any dog beds left, except for the ones in their crates which he hasn't destroyed...... YET. Dog beds in the living room - gone. Mat outside in the kennel - gone. We can't leave shoes on the floor or those will be gone too. He has a thing for my husband's work shoes and my flip flops. Lately every morning I find shredded kleenex next to my side of the bed on the floor. Probably from the tissue I put under my pillow every night (as I wake up stuffy sometimes and want to blow my nose) but it's in pieces on the floor the next morning. The only things he won't destroy are his antlers and believe it or not tennis balls. He used to chew the fuzz off them but not anymore because once he starts, we take it away and his ball is his favorite toy and he knows he won't see it for a long time. Anything else - kongs, tough toys - destroyed w/in 15 minutes.

It's definitely a "Dad! You're home! Look what I did for you" face :) She has always been a chewer. She even has managed to chew off most of the points on her antlers so now they look more like horns :) The lucky thing is she doesn't eat the bits of things she chews off, she just likes the process. So, fine... as long as they are her things. But she has been doing SO much better out of her kennel then in. She chewed up three beds, numerous times (after being resewed). One time she even pulled through the blanket we drape on top all the way through one slat (that must have taken her a while) and chewed it up lol.

I think the thing is, when we aren't here...if it is on the floor alongside all her toys it must be fair game. I think it fell off when she jumped up to look out the window (she knows furniture is off limits without an invite when we are home and will ask, but when we aren't...it's the only way she can see out and I'm no dummie to think she will stay off lol). So once it made it's way to the floor...game over. At least she didn't get super creative and chew all three :) I also think the hubbs came home later than usual at lunch hour that day, so she is used to seeing someone around the 4 hour mark and got frustrated with that too.

We still love her :)

I feel bad for those that have chewers like that... several people have asked me how I trained mine not to chew my stuff or the kids toys... I simply say I dont know... Striker is a chewer but only his chew toys... since they were puppies we never went crazy making sure everything was picked up so maybe that helped... shoes are always left out and the kids toys (legos) are all over... the dogs never touch them.. the dogs do like to play tug-o-war with blankets so I do have to tell them that those blankets arent theirs sometimes...

I think some just find interest in it more than others. We have never had an issue with her chewing our things, because if she grabs something she isn't sure is hers she brings it to us and we tell her either she may have or that it is ours and then trade with something of hers. But she definitely loves to chew and always has. I wish she could have fun plush toys, but we don't even bother now. Being home alone no kennel is still fairly new. She also just hit heat so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with all the pillows being off the couch and in a little pile lol.

My nephew dog used to eat clothes, shoes, pillows, carpet...she was so frustrated until he grew out of it. I still consider ourselves very lucky lol.

Yep, you are right! It had to happen eventually. :) I had at one time bought a cloth beanbag chair for my now long-gone foundation bitch...she was tiny and seemed to like being on things...it was cheap and it was Amie's. For awhile. Then Amie's puppies became mobile. :) They were in their own enclosure, while I was away at work (yes, all 9 pretty much stayed put) as they were weaned and just growing up. One day I came home to find no puppies in their area inside the house....I looked out the doggie door into the yard. No puppies there either. Amie and Roper were outside and seemed relatively unconcerned, so I didn't think anyone had been there. I could hear little puppy voices and walked down the hall to my bedroom door...uh-oh, the door was closed! Opening the door, I witnessed a fearful sight! They had gotten the beanbag chair! It looked like it had snowed! Styrofoam beads were everywhere, clinging to bedding, furniture, walls, and puppies!!!! They were having a blast! Dear heavens, what to do. They all were shooed outside, and cleaned off....but those beads!!! and stuffing! I vacuumed until I couldn't any more...I took out two garbage bags full of them...and when I moved from there three years later I was still finding styrofoam balls in things. And the puppies pooped white poop for a few days also...

Resolved, then and there never to own another beanbag chair. :) And Amie was so sad without her chair, she took over the footstool.

Never underestimate the Shorthair creativity! :D

What a BEAUTIFUL doggie!!! And no, you're right, you can't be mad at that! How adorable! I have two 11 month old GSP's. My female is more of a chewer, my male, not so much......UNTIL, he broke his toe. He has been crated a lot, and walked on a leash for 4 weeks. SO, no surprise when all of a sudden he starts chewing everything. He chewed 4 splints, 4 bandages, the bottom of a dog bed that was sitting on top of his wire crate, a hat that he pulled through the crate, a pillow case that he pulled through the crate, a pillow ripped to shreds inside his kennel, AND, the kicker......he ate an entire corner off of the leather couch that was up against his kennel. I finally gave up the ghost and padded his splint and RAN him for 2 miles last night and the night before. GSP's were never meant to be housed for 4 weeks. He is not limping, and I secured the splint very well.......but he HAD to RUN! I used to get upset when they chewed up their beds. However, I realized a pattern. The chewing is in DIRECT correlation with NO EXERCISE that day. Kaido has been an ANGEL considering the really bad chewing just started 2 days ago. I purchased the bitter apple spray, and he has left everything alone!! I also exercise him. The broken toe is on the right rear outer toe. Non weight bearing. Vet said it's best to splint and keep him calm, but if it fails, he will heal in time on his own, and because it's non-displaced, it will heal well regardless of what we do. The boy's gotta run! I'm sure your pup just really misses you, and the runs. I have always heard that GSP's should never be left outside of their crates when owners are not there because they can get seperation anxiety, and they chew things up. However, I notice that many leave them out with no repercussions. This is good news! Here's hoping to ONE DAY I can leave them to roam the house! .

You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."
