From initial visit to his return home from surgery. $1790.53 This included a stomach tack ($300) Seamus is home on full lock-down, but doing really well. Is this cost above or below what you would expect? This is the biggest vet bill I have ever had.

You should feel incredibly lucky! Jasper's mom had gastric torsion and of course it happened on a Sunday just before midnight. Emergency trip to the vet, emergency surgery, plus a few days in the ICU after and my dad walked away with a vet bill around $4500. Because there is a family history of it and Jasper had already started to show signs of bloating, but not twisting, I opted to do a prophylactic gastropexy a few years ago. It was done laparoscopically and I paid about $800. I don't know how common it is to do a pexy prophylactically in GSPs, but in Danes it's much more common and we had our Dane done when she was spayed. And just for comparison, when Autumn decided to eat nine feet of rug, her surgery was about $3300 (for the surgery and the overnight stay at the emergency vet). And I was fortunate in that I caught it well before most owners do, according to my vet. She did not have any necrotic tissue so she was back to normal in a couple of weeks. I don't know how much has to do with where you are located. My dad is in northern CA and I am in northern CO. Because we have a vet school, there are a lot of vets to choose from in my area. I love my vet and would happily pay slightly more for his services over some of the crap vets that are in our area. I also used to work in the industry and have friends that still do, so I know a lot of the gossip and dirt that the average owner is unaware of Glad Seamus is healing well and you were able to catch it quickly!!! Here's to a speedy recovery!

I have never experienced having to get my dogs surgery like that, but my first thought was wow that's a better price than I would have expected....

Those numbers are scary to look at after Sunday. Tucker got pummeled by a 100+ pound lab on a farm and we noticed shortly afterwards that he had bloated up pretty good. Turns out he'd just gotten into something at ate a whole bunch of it. Luckily the vet said he should pass it just fine if we fed him light and gave him lots of water over the next couple days. It's a bit worrisome seeing how bad it could have been.
