Anyone ever deal with this? My GSP did not have an appetite on Friday, a trip to the vet led to x-rays & bloodwork. Diagnosed with enlarged spleen. Asummed it was a tumor. Sonogram today confirmed enlarged spleen. The surgery revealed a twisted spleen, just about to burst. The vet removed the spleen & sutured the pups stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent his stomach twisting in the future.
The only symptoms were loss of appetite, obvious discomfort when laying down some difficulty pooping. |

Thank you everbell. It looks like he will recover and be fine. He will be kept at the vet for 48hrs because bleeding is a big risk, and because Seamus a very high energy GSP. He will be on full lock down for another week, then limited mobility the second week. The vet said that deep-chested dogs are at risk for the spleen and stomach to twist. |

You are very lucky. Have lost two dogs to gastric torsion and the third, bloated and torsioned but because I had come home early due to a short work day, noticed she was "off"....refused a cookie...lay down in the "sphinx" position , was popped into the van and I was on the phone to the vet as I drove the 18 miles to town. Luckily, my vet is a Dane breeder and as soon as she finished up another surgery took her right in and did a gastropexy while she was in there...no tissue death nor compromise. That was 5 years ago, and Emma just turned 14 years old last Friday.... . Fast action on torsion can often mean the difference in life and death....blood supply is cut off and stomach and bowel tissue can die quickly.
You'll probably want to add some probiotics to his food for awhile, and maybe even look into The Honest Kitchen, which is dehydrated and easily digested...definitely not kibble for awhile.

Singletrak- thanks for the advice, I certainly will look into the probiotics and the dehydrated food. Seamus also spent a lot of time in the sphinx position. |

So glad to hear all is going to be ok. That really had to be scary.
Is torsion a problem with GSP's? That's making me nervous now with the way Lucy flies around and twists in the air when playing. I'm always on the lookout for it with my dobe. |

I think the stomach becoming twisted is more common than the spleen. It is my understanding that any deep chested breed is at a higher risk for those occuring. Great Danes and German Sheperds Swiss mountain dog.
My GSP is the size of a small Great Dane. 31 inches at the withers. he is very deep chested. |

If you want to see the health issues the GSPCA did a health survey 7 years ago (in 2005) -- with 3,272 GSPs reported, 52 had GDV (Bloat) issues identified in the survey.

| Our APBT who is 11 had his spleen removed last year due to it being enlarged. No cancer though thank goodness. One thing that was explained to us is that a dog that has no spleen also has a compromised immune system now. So we have to be careful with things like vaccinations and such as the live vaccines could do more harm than good. The fact that he is 11 though he should have all the antibodies he needs for all vaccines. But it even became apparent when his body was dissolving the inner stitches as they became a little infected and he had to be put on antibiotics. Rajah healed up really quick and was back to normal win about 6 weeks time (only because of the other stitches dissolving did it even take this long). |

| Moose1. Good advice. Thank you. It seems to tie in with what singletrak advice of starting him on probiotics. I did not really think about the immune system. I never would have thought about vaccinations. I will ask the vet about vaccinations when we go back to have his stitches removed. |

| I have 2 11 month old GSP's and the male is super deep chested, the female, not as much. They eat 3 times a day so I can dived their food up into smaller portions. I put them in their kennel for one to two hours after they eat because they have TONS of energy after eating, and do not allow them water immediately before or after feeding. Prior to reading about bloat, they would eat a full 1 1/2 cups and be outside running full speed and rolling each other in play. I have since read about torsion though. That's not going to happen anymore. In fact, we have stopped the rough play all together. They get way too rough. |

Famous Seamus is fully recovered from his splenectomy. He did manage to get his incision infected. Cone of shame + antibiotics did the trick.
He is full speed, jumping and running like nothing ever happened.
