Nipped Leos to the vet this morning as he has been scratching his ear alot. Sure enough he has an ear infection so now got anti b's. Anyway, we got talking about food and I said that I fed Orijen, to which she replied

"oh, that's a mid range food".
"really?" I replied "what would you recommend then?"

She then recommeded 2 foods. I won't name them for fear of upsetting anyone who feeds them. One (we'll call in Afood, was actually OK, a good food, the other B food was total rubbish.

"really? I said "funny that you are saying that the 2 foods you sell are better then the food I feed, do you actually know anything about Orijen?"
"yes, i've heard of it"
"and you can honestly tell me that Bfood is better?" I asked
"well, yes" she said
"well you obviously don't know what you're talking about, do you? I announced "would you like a run down of what rubbish is in Bfood?"
"I know what's in it" she said
"well, how about a run down on what's in Orijen?" She just stared at me so I continued "i don't claim to know everything about dog food but i've done my research and I would only feed Bfood if it was the last food available on the earth. OK, Afood is a pretty good food but If I was having problems with Orijen I would try alot more foods before I tried that". Again, she stared at me so again I continued "I respect you as a vet and would never question what you say when it comes to vetinary stuff but please don't make statements about dog food when you haven't really done any reasearch and don't know what you're talking about".

She then apologised, I paid and left :-)

vets are notoriously uninformed about nutrition and foods - glad you spoke up and got an apology
I tried a new vet last year and after he went on and on about how wonderful Bugsy's condition was and his coat etc. then asked what I fed him.
I said Orijen and raw and then he went on to say that I shouldn't be feeding high protein and raw hahahaha
I was like OK yea dude you just told me how awesome he looked and now I am killing him with high quality food. insert eye roll

It's Bugsy's world...

Vet's say the darndest things... ;)

We got lucky. We actually have a local vet that learned his stuff about food, problems with foods, high priced quality foods. He developed and now markets his own quality food (reasonable in comparison to other high quality foods, and since he's local he offers a lot of great deals to make it even more affordable). It's what we feed Bella. I'm not sure how far his marketing spans. But Bella does great on it.

Kudos for standing up when most would just trust what they say for face value.

Yep, definately think vets and docs are inclined towards the old "god complex" - doesnt do them harm to have their opinions questioned now and then.  Canine nutrition is such an unknown area, it's really difficult to get definitive, official and authoritative info (apart from from those who make dog food  who are more than biased).  I think forums like these are definately the best place to go to for information on that subject.

Miss you forever Kintra baby xxx

My vet once told me "I don't put anything in my dogs mouths to eat that I would not personally put in my own!" She told me drop the store bought treats and use hot dog, or cheese bits, bread, etc. not dog treats. She feeds her dogs the old fashion way, straight from the table. THey get all the scraps they want and are in excellent health. When I told her I was feeding raw with my dogs she never batted an eye.

Sorry you had the not so great interaction with your Vet.

In my neck of the USA science diet wasand still is  touted to be the best dog food by our local vets. I found out that was because they got kick backs from Science diet for selling it.

Science diet has corn meal and other fillers at the top of the ingredient list. The trend now is going toward non grain . more protien ,fat and  superfoods and herbs.  I'm pro herb.

I have been feeding her Taste of the wild Prarie which has bison and other meats. Hanna is ho hum about it as she was with Acana.which I fed her befor.  I was leaning toward all stages food.

I have to supliment her kibble to get her to eat it ( as in cooking chicken . or adding cottage cheese  or baked sweet potatoes with parmesan and cottage cheese.)

She really does love taste of the wild ...

as in deer scat, snake skeletons , possum skulls  to name a few.

I can barely get her to consume two cups of her dog food.  suplimented.I have been wondering if the high grain foods are tastier than these new non grain foods.  She won't eat straight kibble unless she has been running around for five hours and is starved.  My last GSP ate kibble only and some of my table scraps.  She always ate with gusto. not once did I supliment her kibble.  I was feeding her proplan .

She looks  on the skinny side . 8.5 months and 43 lbs,  so Im worried shes not getting all that she needs .

Hunger strike Hanna is  so savey !  Has me well trained
