So, I figured I would try something new to capture some pictures in different ways with Sadie Dock-Jumping. So, I shot some video from a bench on the dock, and then used Windows Media Live to capture some snap-shots from the videos. I thought they turned-out pretty neat, so I thought I would post them and get some thoughts. If the camera was a little higher quality (using a Sony point-and-shoot (WC-60?) for video) - pink no-less (real men... ah forget it it's my wife's camera), I think they would really be something. Let me know what you think:

HA! Good catch! I thought it would be great to catch the stretch off the end of the dock. It just happens so dang fast (as you are well-aware seing your outstanding photos, smatulewicz  ), I knew there would be no way possible to get it without the video. The blur at the tail, and trailing leg indicate the speed at which it all happens. Guess the angle of the shot helps as well (behind and shooting down her side). Also catches the power of the flanks well, I thought. |

Nice PB. Yes, I actually did work some T-drills in the water (we have to make sure that our drills transfer, right?). Personally, though, I think T-pictures are boring. Video is better for that type of thing (don't you think?). All work and no play... you know what they say... Versatile (isn't that the "V" in NAVHDA?)

A great shot would be of you (camera behind you) giving the cast and the dog taking it - now THAT would not be boring

You got some great stills! I have been behind a camera for years (much to hubby's annoyance when I'm technically off the clock but still at it lol) it is hard to turn off a passion. Timing a moving pup is difficult but you learn to anticipate the next move, and get your focus to beat them to it. Stills from video never have quite the same resolution but are still great none the less, I do it too.
I still have to work with Bella on jumping out and not just up. Gotta future out how to get her to deploy her go go gadgets |

OK Francine. I will post some pics of casting (LOL!). You did see my casting video, right? I think both are pretty exciting. Harder to catch the excitement in a cast (for the non-trainer/handlers, of course). But, yes, I think the dock jumping is more exciting than a casting drill (from a picture standpoint). More exciting would be a video of a bird - point to retrieve! Stay tuned...
Smatulewicz - Actually, Jumping out is quite easy. The dog tends to do that naturally, it is jumping high that they don't do naturally (so if yours does it, bonus!). First, you need a dock that is not too high (lower the better). Sit the dog next to you, and throw the dummy. Let the dog run right off the dock - faster the better! Repetition is key. Point being to get the dog to eliminate any anxiety behind the jump (anxiety can cause the dog to pause). I also like to run the chase on dry land (no dock) to get her speed up chasing the dummy. |

Thanks for the pointers! She doesn't seem to hesitate jumping off our small dock at camp (though I have noticed as she is jumping off things like the boat, and a floating dock there is more hesitation and may also be carrying over to the stable dock). Though, I don't really want her feeling too confident jumping off the boat, in case she should want to go after something when it isn't ideal for her to be exiting the boat.
Our small dock is fairly low, and fairly stable...but there are spaces in between the slats she can't get the speed she otherwise would. At the beach, I back her up fairly far and I will get to a spot where it drops off so she runs full speed on ground until she gets to the drop off so it is basically the same as she lands in full water. She loves it. She loves the dock too, but just goes I would say about 5-6 feet out. Maybe she'd be better in the new category where they jump up to actually grab the buoy

| I just thought too, I'm also not throwing the buoy until her mouth is nearly to it, and that may be limiting her distance. She doesn't feel the need to jump out since it's right in front of her face. Maybe I'll start chucking it out there when she is about half way and see how that goes. I know the throw is a lot, but what we do for now is just for fun, though it would be fun to get her jumping big so we could travel to some events for fun too! |

Yeah - I know that issue (throwing too late). I try to shake it up a little now. Most of the throws will be just beyond her reach, or land right where I want her to land. When she starts to slow down her take-off, I actually throw a "fakie", and stomp on the dock and fake-throw right before tossing it. That usually gets her moving along faster.
Yeah, in your previous message you refer to "Extreme Vertical" (EV). I have been trying to think of how to make a fixture like they use. I think I settled on using my Pool Leaf-rake pole - if I could just figure out the trigonometry (it's my engineering background )Did you know, however, that EV was developed to get dogs to jump up more for the Big Air (distance jumping)? I always found that interesting. |

To the avid trainer/handler, yes - it may. I still like pictures that capture the power, and athleticism of the dog.
