No hunting license is required for entering and testing in a Hunt Test or Field Trial. You simply fill out the application for and send in a cheque. If there is room they will enter you if not they will either rip up the cheque or send it back.

i can't imagine why the club's secretary told me i needed to purchase one. i am looking at hunt tests in three different states in the next two months. between supplies, gas, lodging, entry fees, and now licenses this is quickly growing out of my budget.

The German system requires a hunting license.
Never heard of AKC requiring one, tho.
Maybe you misunderstood?

I guess it could vary per state you are running hunt test  in.

In Iowa you do not need a license to enter and then run in a sanctioned event.

You do however need a Hunting license to run and or train your dogs on state owned ground. No license required the day of the event on field trial permit.

Good luck and have fun at your tests.

Many states require that you have a license to participate in hunt tests or field trials. Here in Illinois, state residents must have a current hunting license. Out of state folks are covered under the trial permit.

NC is even more strict; all participants must have a current license from their state of residence. If the event does not have a state field trial permit, all particpants must have a current NC license regardless of their homestate.

There was a big deal a few years ago at one of the major American Field trials up at Hoffman; warden rolled in and cited just about everyone they could, including folks just riding in the gallery. I guess many of the citations were thrown out, but since then the local clubs have been making sure they've got field trial permits and that anyone involved in the trial (handlers, judges, gunners, bird planters, etc) has a current hunting license from their home state.
