I'm sorry to hear your little one is still not doing well :( The butt-licking and runny poo can be frustrating. Our Luna had a little bit of a similar situation with the butt-licking, not runny poo, when we couldn't clear up her coccidia for 5 months and she had been on 3 or 4 rounds of antibiotics. I feel like her GI system was just stripped off her natural bacteria and it took a while to get back. After the last round of antibiotics, our vet expressed her anal glands and then we added Purina Fortiflora probiotic http://www.purinaveterinarydiets.com/Product/FortiFloraCanineNutritionalSupplements.aspx to her diet daily for 3 months now and it is 100% resolved :) It took a long time, and it's hard to pinpoint what exactly helped, but from here on out she gets the probiotic on her food daily unless we forget. We ended up not putting any spray or cream on her butt because then she'd have a tendency to lick it more and it would start all over. May be worth trying! The pro-biotic may also harden the stool. We just buy ours off amazon but I'm sure you can get other probiotics at your local dog store.
Good luck!

I like that idea. I’ll have to check it out. It would seem to me that this should be a simple fix because he’s never had this problem before. I was talking to my sister this morning and she suggested adding some pumpkin to his food? I was going over there today so she said that she would give some to me. So I think I’m going to give that a try tonight. Also I was thinking maybe putting some yogurt in his food might help. Seems to work on humans? Any thoughts?

pumpkin can firm up poo - just a spoon or two on each meal
plain live yogurt is good but generally isn't strong enough to truly help out :(

I will give the pumpkin a try for sure.

I just had another thought. About 4 weeks ago I had to get the TOW puppy chow because they didn’t have any of the TOW I normally get due to it being recalled. Do you guys think that this could be part of the issue? If so I’m thinking about switching to Purina Pro Plan Performance.

It certainly could be the food switch. Did the loose stool happen right after the switch? I know most say switch food gradually, but if you think it was the food I would go ahead and switch him completely and feed the pumpkin too. I feed Purina Performance and my dogs do great on it. It also won't hurt to give plain yogurt. Also be sure the pumpkin has no spices. I would also use the spray cortisone and just don't let him lick his booty.

The poo problem didn’t start right away. It seems that it started to get soft after the first surgery, and then got worse with the second. I’m guessing from the antibiotics. But the itchy hurt butt problem was completely new. He hasn’t had the chance to lick his butt in a few days because I’ve been keeping a cone on him. I’ll continue that until his butt thing is resolved. Until then it’s going to be baby wipes and some butt numbing stuff.

Thank you all for the responses! I think I have enough to go on for now, and I’ll keep you updated.

Here’s my plan of action for tonight:
Yogurt
Pumpkin
Bag Balm or the Cortisone spray
Change food to Purina Performance Pro Plan

I wouldn't swap the food until he gets some relief from all the stuff going on. My heart goes out to this poor guy - even though I know soon enough he'll have no memory of it! (that's my hope anyway)
Just think if it upsets his GI even more! I would go ahead and swap after he is feeling a bit better, but of course that is JMHO

I just picked up a bottle of the benadryl spray for my DH's bug bites it was $6 and they had cortisone spray too at about the same price (Target)
Give him some extra love from me please

I know it's cheaper to buy it on-line but I would call the vet's office and try and see if they have the Purina Fortiflora (like mckee.lucie said they used).  I too have used this product and it works wonders.  As a matter of fact a couple weeks ago I was out of town and one of my neighbors was watching the dogs (she works at the vet) and Archer got some "stress-induced diarrhea", she gave him a packet of the Fortiflora on his food in the evening and by the next morning he was much better.

Poor fella!  Be sure and give him a big hug.

Just called to see where they sell FortiFlora. I'm going to give the pumpkin and Yogurt a shot first to see if that helps. Because he's on antibiaotics I'm thinking that the FortiFlora may not really affect him that much. If it's still soft after those are done, I will deffinatly give it a try.

You could have a hard time catching up as long as he is on antibiotics. Might be worth a try to check with the vet to see if they could be discontinued or perhaps changed to something else.

Sounds like you're on the right track to me. Hope it gets back to normal soon for you! After Luna's stools and coccidia cleared up and we've kept her on the fortiflora since we switched her from TOTW to Natures Variety instinct and her stools have been excellent since. They were never bad on TOTW before, but seem to be much better consistency and regularly solid since :) I don't think you can go wrong with the plan you're going with!

First I want to say thank you for all your responses.

Looks like things are starting to clear up for Dexter. I started on Friday when I got home and gave him some pumpkin in his food. I used some Tucks on his bum (because that’s what I had) to relieve some pain. Gave him some more pumpkin in his food the next morning, and later that day he pooped out a string about 3 inches long. After that he seemed a lot more relieved, and more like himself. I continued with the pumpkin for the rest of the weekend to help with the poo to see if it’d help stiffen in up a little. I believe the pumpkin made a huge difference and helped push things along. Saturday night was also his last night on one of the Antibiotics and tonight will be the last night on the other one.

Last night I was actually able to take cone off without any issues, so I think this problem can be marked in the solved column :-)

Glad to hear of the progress! Poor Dexter has had a rough go. Summer is no time to be feeling icky. Hope it is all continues to be downhill from here!
