My vet talked me into switching to Trifexis.  Saying it will work bettter at preventing round, hook and whipworms in addition to the heartworm and fleas.  I was previously using Triheart Plus and K9 Advanitx II.

I gave it to Binni today and she seems fine, but I have been reading reviews on Trifexis and A LOT of people are reporting adverse reactions to this product.  I always second guess my decisions and am now so upset for giving this to my dogs.  (also gave it to Niko, my almost 6 month old english springer, who just tested positive for roundworms)

Also, it doesn't protect against ticks, so I will still have to use another product in addition.

Just wondering what preventatives others are using?

I use Sentinel and only use the topicals when needed.

Texas Belle,

As always, Thank you for your reply.  I think you are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to GSP's.

I love my Binni Bell and want to do what's best for her.  I have been watching her all evening and so far it doesn't seem like the Trifexis is making her sick.  But, I will not use it again.  It just makes me too nervous.

Hi Binni,

Because of my vet's recommendation I too switched to Trifexis. I've given the Trifexis to Archer & Zoe for 3 months now and have not had any issues.  I understand what you're saying - you read everything and then think "OMG what have I just done to my dog"!

I can't remember what we use for our dogs ... I want to say Sentinel?

We use a homemade tick deterrant and lots of hands-on monitoring for ticks. After reading the side effects and warnings for the topical treatments, we took it back to the vet. At the time we had two cats, and the warning was that it was toxic to cats. My thinking was, if it was toxic to the cats, what would it do to me. Plus the logistics of petting the dog, wash hands before petting cat, blew my mind ...

As someone who also second guesses myself all the time - please, please dont beat yourself up over this.  It's so difficult to know what products to use, but please bear in mind that when it comes to something like a preventative medicine for dogs, most people wouldnt think to review such a product if they find successful (except on a forum such as this), but they absolutely wouldnt hesitate to write a negative review if it didnt work or if there was an adverse reaction - human nature unfortunately, you'll only really hear about negative experiences.  There's every chance what you've read represents a very small minority.

Sorry i cant help with a recommendation because most of the products are under different names over here, but i do hear that advantix/advocate is the strongest and the one that most vets recommend over here for areas where heartworm and ticks are rife! I just use frontline (fipronil i think) and it's been effective so far.

I know a few people that are using it including one of my puppy owners.  All but two have said they've had no problems, of those two, one of those dogs has had problems with numerous other products.

With 7 it would cost a small fortune for me to try.  I use Ivermectin horse paste once a month for HW.  Safeguard goat wormer for other worms if needed.  Was using Frontline for ticks and fleas but have had one dog come down with Lymes & later Ehrlichia so switched to Preventic collars.  Have not had problems with fleas in several years.  We do annual fecal and HW checks which have always come back clear.

We use Heartguard. Velvet was on interceptor for a bit. Hands on tick checks and garlic in their dinners.....no fleas so fsr, very few ticks and the mosquitos stay away. Was using Frontline last year but Windsor turned pink and was itchy.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply.  I have decided to go back to tri heart or heartguard and the k9 advantix.  I just don't feel comfortable using the Trifexis and a topical also to take care of ticks. Too many different chemicals!!!! Anyway, Trifexis costs a fortune and the mixed reviews just make me too nervous.  I should of just stuck with what I was used to for the past twelve years.  But, it's been a long time since I've had puppies and things have changed.

Bev, I too used Sentinal but cannot seem to find any . . . apparently they are not making it at this time . . . vet does not have any nor can I seem to order it online from a reputable place.

I have used trifexis without any issues.  I live in an area where ticks are not common at all, so have  not had an issue with that.  Java has done fine on it.

Roz - The plant where Novartis makes Sentinel and Interceptor is the same plant they made Excedrin and there was a quality control issue with Excedrin which forced them to shut down the entire plant. My vet says the Sentinel Rep is telling them they will have some the first of August. So you might want to check with your vet in a month. Thankfully I buy a years worth so just ran out. The next time I need to give my dogs Sentinel is in August so I am hoping that the rep is right and they get some in.

We don't have ticks bad in Central TX either and fleas haven't even been too bad here in the last 10 years or so. However, the mosquitos are everywhere even with the dry weather.

We use Heartguard and Comfortis for fleas. Our vet mentioned Trifexis, but i had not heard of it, and wanted to do some research. I know if  your pup tests postive for heartworms and they have been on Heartgaurd (and you can show receipt of purchase and a past negative heartworm test) Heartguard will pay for the heartworm treatment or a good portion of it. We have have liked the comfortis also, havent noticed fleas. Also havent seent any negative reaction from the pups to either medication.

update:

I was at the vet today and they gave me a full credit of  $113.00 for the Trifexis.  The company sent a replacement packet to the vet, so it was no loss for them. .  I was able to get 8 months worth of K9 advantix II.  There was a promotion for buy 6 tubes and get 2 free. I am going back to Tri heart for the heartworm treatment.

Bearoff gets Comfortis for fleas and nothing but me checking him for ticks.
Jenny gets Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks.
Both get Iverhart Max for heartworms.

I'd like to use something for ticks on Bearoff but his fur is so short, the topical stuff just rolls off or flys off if he shakes after application.
Jenny's fur is a little longer and thicker. She swims a lot though so I have to keep her out of the water right after application.

Back when I had Sunshine too, I used Frontline plus on all 3 of them. Then about the end of August, they all had fleas. That's when I switched to Comfortis for all 3 and have kept Bearoff on it.

Ticks have been bad this year. I just pulled 3 off of Bearoff. They are normally easy to find though. I hate the little tiny ticks, they are hard to find. I've found more ticks on myself than Bearoff this year.

Actually, we use Interceptor for the dogs for heartworm (for some reason I think we used Sentinel for Shiraz when we first got her).

All my dogs are on Trifexis. I was terrified at first, but my vet told me ALL hers are on it. I have been using Trifexis on 3 of our dogs for 5 months with NO ill side effects, not even vomiting. I give it on a full stomach. The most common side effect is vomiting. Our lab has a hx of seizures, so she cannot take it.
