I have an 9 week old pup, She doent seem interested in Bird or doing much of anything except play and chew on everything, how do I get the natural bird instinct to kick in? or am I just being paranoid that she doesnt have the drive? and When I try to play fetch with her she doesnt get to excited, she will go get it but doesnt want to bring it back? any suggestions? I want to to this dog right so i want to get it right first...... Thanks everyone!!      I also know she is a pup but i am just alittle worried.

What does her pedigree look like?
It's rare to find a shorthair that, at least, won't search, point and retrieve, even if it's lame retrieve.

She's just a puppy.

What have you done with her to date?

Have you looked into NAVHDA or other clubs?

Congrat's on the new pup ! I say let her be a pup your worries are probably nothing. Take her out & let her explore & work on getting her coming.
Enjoy !

She has an amazing pedigree with her mom being a junior hunter with her generations behind her being a few NFC MH, SH and AFCs.... her dad on the other hand is the best he is a master hunter and has 90% NFCs in his past generations..... The pedigree is fantastic.... as for to date just Letting her explore my yard and taking her for walks...... I have looked into NavHAD and there is a club near me that trains so i will be out there as soon as she gets her shots! Thanks evryone for the help and anymore advise is always appriciated

How do you know she isn't interested in birds? Has she had a chance to play with a quail? Has she been introduced to birds in any way? I would take her to the NAVDHA training and see how she does.

As for retrieving make it a game and get her excited. Toss the ball and when she gets it run from her. I bet she will chase. Also if she does bring it back don't take it from her right away.

Enjoy her time as a puppy and quit worrying. She will get there. Have fun and post some pictures.
